The retina community is experiencing an influx of information for the management and treatment of retinal vein occlusions (RVO) and diabetic macular edema (DME). This assortment of data mainly comes from clinical trials which are designed to test and assess various treatments, provide dosing recommendations, and combinations thereof for different patient populations. This activity will provide retina specialists with these emerging findings and offer opportunities to analyze and discuss this new information as it relates to daily clinical practice and clinical decision-making. This activity will also feature interactive case studies that focus on the practical application of new treatments for patients with RVO and DME.

Evolving Issues in Diabetic Macular Edema: New Medications and Drug Delivery Technologies

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the major cause of vision loss in people with diabetic retinopathy. In recent years, results from several clinical trials have been published including the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network’s “Protocol H” trial, the READ-2 trial, the RESOLVE trial, “Protocol I” trial, RESTORE, and FAME. Furthermore, new delivery system technology has been developed and is being introduced into the armamentarium of clinical practice. Results from several studies assessing the safety and efficacy of steroids using different delivery methods for the management of DME have been recently announced and even more will be announced in the near future. In addition to steroids, results from trials using laser therapy, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors and other approaches are breaking into clinical practice. With all these emerging opportunities for DME, it is incumbent on the ophthalmologist to remain well informed and aggressive with rapid diagnosis and optimal treatment.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) for Patients with Diabetes

In this multi-layered, knowledge/application/practice-based continuing pharmacy education activity the University of Connecticut and Drug Topics will develop pharmacist competence in MTM and Motivational Interviewing.  The activity is designed to expand from knowledge-based activities to practice-based skills by properly scaffolding knowledge, application and practice-based learning opportunities with sound instructional design.

The activities will consist of 3 phases designed to build upon each other to provide comprehensive education in the area of diabetes care.  Pharmacists may participate at any level of education that meets their needs, however, a Practice-based Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those who have completed all phases of the education.

Methadone and Oral Health

Methadone is a prescription drug used to help individuals overcome withdraws from highly addictive illicit substances, such as heroin, but it has detrimental oral health effects. This manuscript reviews the oral health manifestations of methadone maintenance therapy, and considers its implications to oral care. It hopes to raise awareness among health care professionals, regulating bodies and the population at large about the oral side effects of methadone, the implications for dental treatment and considerations to better enhance the oral health of methadone users. The role of professional teams, particularly dentists and dental hygienists, is illustrated.
