Foundations
This attachment shows various trainings I have completed during my time in the Liberty University counseling program. These certifications show my foundational knowledge and willingness to meet ethical and legal standards in school counseling. By having trainings and being prepared for things I may face within the school system, I am able to advocate for others and effectively use these programs or the knowledge I have gained to help others.  251210084306_Certifications_for_Counseling.docx (.docx) 0.14mb

Counseling Prevention and Intervention
This file contains a form that I filled out in order to make sure I followed protocol with our school system when helping our school counselor with a suicide assessment. In this form I show one of the necessary interventions a school counselor must do in order to prevent suicide. By completing this form and following the steps in the protocol, I was able to make sure this student received the right services for them. After completion of this form I feel as though preventative measures helped the long term success and wellness of this student. Suicide Assessment (.pdf) 0.15mb

Diversity and Advocacy

This attachment is based on a completed project in which I had to choose a culture and identify the characteristics, the values and how they differ from my own culture. Though the culture I discuss was the elderly population, it gave me tools in working with families of my students to better understand the view of grandparents or elderly people having to take care of children. In this assignment, I learned about the importance of different cultures during initial investigation when trying to choose a culture. When deep diving into this culture I learned how important a cultures values can affect students and families and how as a counselor I must be informed of those values because it will greatly benefit my students. Understanding someone's culture can help build a relationship and better support the things that a student may value.

Assessment
This document shows my ability to use relevant data to come up with a plan for a student and to implement that plan over a period of time. In this document, I set up a plan to work with this student based on relevant ideas by learning about the student and deciding what techniques would benefit them best. Being able to assess this student helped to provide the necessary resources in which the student could use to enhance them in areas socially, emotionally and mentally after implementing this plan. By being able to layout a plan and identify the needs of this student it has improved my ability as a counselor to review data and use it to my advantage by finding techniques that work and ones that do not. As a counselor projects like this one have shown me the importance of knowing my own skills and being able to learn about myself and where I also can improve. 251210073417_annotated_Practicum_20Benchmark_20Case_20Conceptualization_20_26_20School_20Counseling_20Services_20Treatment_20Plan_20DMB.docx_1_.pdf (.docx_1_) 0.19mb

Research and Evaluation
The assignment attached here is a program of guidance lessons based around social, emotional, and mental well being. These lessons were presented to 7th and 8th grade students to learn about being a "well-balanced" student. By using relevant data and research I used Character Strong as a guide to develop relevant lessons that would be presented to different classes in order to track the effects on attendance and discipline referrals. By being able to implement this program, I was able to evaluate this program and see what worked as well as what did not to hopefully implement it in the future with even better success.  Culminating Project Lessons (.pptx) 1.27mb

Academic Development
This attachment is a lesson given to students entering high school that helped set a four year plan for them. It helped these students to be able to visualize and layout the next four years of their lives based on their current interest and the requirements they would need to complete. By helping these students visualize their high school careers, it helped build positivity and create goals for these students in which they could work towards during this time. This was developed to inform these students about the state requirements and how to get to graduation, as well as help relieve some tensions on selecting classes and things they are interested in. By giving this presentation, students were more aware of what they needed to take to graduate and could discover the different pathways they could take to reach their goals. 251210075014_annotated_High_20School_204_Year_20Planning.pptx.pdf (.pptx) 0.36mb

Collaboration and Consultation
Working with many partners and stakeholders, I created a resource guide for the county that was given to students and families. In working with all these various people, the importance of having resources for students became very evident to me. Being able to communicate with so many organizations, families, teachers and staff members, I was able to build great connections. When I was able to collaborate with others, it was a great feeling seeing how we all work together to help support our students and communities. Resource Guide (.docx) 4.36mb

Leadership
In this PowerPoint, I involved multiple stakeholders to address issues within the school and after receiving feedback I led a series of small groups on conflict management. This PowerPoint shows the process of creating the needs assessment, the data I looked to gain from it, the implementation and evaluation of this program that was created by me to benefit our school. This was an educational program for the students that also helped teachers learn about conflict management and teach strategies for dealing with conflict.  251210020855_Small_Group_Conflict_Management.pptx (.pptx) 1.10mb

COSC 692 Practicum
For this group, 4 students from 15 to 18 years old were focusing on conflict management. The main goal was to teach skills that would help these students deal with conflict between peers as well as teachers. The focus of this group was to help students learn how to take a deep breathe, to take 5 minute breaks, to find a calm space to problem solve, and to resolve problems. By teaching these students these skills, it would help them be more productive inside and outside of the classroom and learn how to avoid conflict that was interfering with their learning.  260427075815_Small_Group_Conflict_Management.pptx (.pptx) 1.10mb

Field Experience Summary

Prompt #1:

In your own words, summarize how serving in both elementary and secondary schools has contributed to your understanding of the diverse developmental needs of K-12 students, including exceptionalities? What have you learned about how K-12 students differ in their development and approaches to learning?  How have you created opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners?

Working in both an elementary as well as a secondary placement has expanded my knowledge on how to help students at all stages of life. Learning how students with exceptionalities present different things at different stages has helped me be prepared at any level to help students. When working with the K-5 student population I was unsure how they learn and how they work. Shortly after spending time with them, they are so hands on and so exciting to work with. They learn through so much modeling and playing that helps to foster a positive learning environment for them. The older students in the secondary setting have a much different approach, working with them through stages of development and the struggles they face is much deeper and emotionally it was vital I learn the signs to look for. As a counselor I looked to be creative for all my students that needed support outside the classroom, by creating extra time for small groups, learning how they learn best and helping to build positive relationships, I created opportunity for students that was outside the normal learning environment to help them. Understanding this population of students and how to support them in 504 and IEP plans is important as a counselor to create these opportunities that give all populations the same representation and support.

Prompt #2: – The Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) states, “The professional counselor recognizes that the client’s beliefs (or absences of beliefs) about spirituality and/or religion are central to his or her worldview and can influence psychosocial functioning.” How have your field experiences contributed to your understanding of the importance of including K-12 students’ religious and spiritual supports, especially if religion and spirituality are valued by the K-12 student?

Learning about students religious and spiritual beliefs can show a lot about why the student functions they way they do. Though as the counselor in a public school you cant talk about religion with your students, you can see how important it can be within that students life. It often serves as a guide for students and can help the counselor understand what the values the student and the family may have. Working in multiple settings throughout this program, religion can play a role at all ages and no matter the age the worldview helps the counselor to see the rationale on decision making at all stages of development.

Prompt #3 – How have your field experiences contributed to your understanding of the importance of including the K-12 student's family, community, and culture as a source of support?

Having the students family involved is a pivotal piece to helping any student. No matter the stage of development, the presenting issues or the solution you view as the counselor, it is so important to support the student through involvement with all the people in their lives. When a student has family involvement, I have seen in my experiences how much that can mean to supporting the student. In order to make students feel safe and supported, you should look to always involve the people that have the most influence on that students life.

Prompt #4 – How has your field experience strengthened your professional identity as a school counselor? What aspects of the school counselor's role, scope of practice, and the referral process have you learned from collaboration and consultation?

This field experience has helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses as a school counselor. By being placed in schools of different ages, it has helped me learn the skills I need as a counselor for students of all ages. This experience helped me grow and learn from other student service staff around me that helped me to see others views and to learn the true job that a school counselor is expected to do. Learning how many people are involved in a students life, and just how much a difference we can make was such an eye opening experience that I learned in this field experience. Being placed in the school that was both elementary and secondary, I learned the skills that I need to be able to support these students no matter my placement and feel more well rounded as a counselor than before. Working with different counselors taught me different things that I will take from all them to ensure I am using all the tools I have been provided to do my ultimate job and support my students.
