Start and End Date: July 2019 to September 2019
Hours: 110
Description: Every weekday during the summer of 2019, I would volunteer for several hours per day. My job consisted of wheeling around a cart full of reading material and offering its contents to the patients. I also talked to the patients if they indicated that they wanted someone to talk to, and helped fulfill various miscellaneous patient requests.
In the summer of 2019, I volunteered at the Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital (Northwell Health). During my time there, I was assigned to wheel around the bookcart and offer literary materials to the patients. I quickly excelled at my job, with multiple patients sending in good reviews about my service. I went on to create a good relationship with the hospital's management, who were instrumental in helping me to improve my services with a brand new cart, an "organizing/storage room" of my own, and new reading materials that were more diverse and of a higher quality. In addition, I helped to manage a blood drive while volunteering at the hospital, and got to meet with the hospital's President, Head of Human Resources, and Head of Volunteer Services because the three of them wished to thank me in person for the exemplary service that I had done while volunteering at their hospital (I even got a Dunkin Donuts gift card from them as a thank you present!). I found this experience to be one of my life's biggest accomplishments because it enabled me to help a lot of people, do a lot of good deeds, greatly improve my communication, organization, and management skills, and further advance myself in my chosen career of medicine.
