White coat ceremony reflection

The profession of pharmacy demands sets of ethical principles necessary to provide optimum health care to patients in community. It not only begins with education but also providing services in community. Service learning is educational pedagogy that connects academics with community service which will help me to build self-efficacy, develop values in common goods, and ability to work in groups and as a leader.

As a student of pharmacy, I pledge that I will do my service learning by maintaining relationship, being loyal to provide service routinely and will achieve impression of truth by giving quality service at the site. I already started contributing principles at the site and will continue to abide the pledge for the rest of my life by providing optimum and effective health care in community.  Pharmacists are the gate keeper of health care in community with adequate and proper knowledge from institution and practice in pharmacy.

Service and Care in the Community Final Journal Entry (P1: Fall)

2019 Service-Learning Journal

Journal entries: topics, and dates by which entries should be made

Entries (and due-dates):

1) Guest Speaker (“1: Speaker”) (Sept. 13)

After the Panel of Speakers event, record the names of the speakers, and some things you learned from them that will benefit you professionally or personally.

Entry: The session about the service learning was conducted by Dr. Paula Green, Vice president of Advancement at Edward Kennedy Community Health Center. She has wonderful experience of 25 years in health care and communication and she is also a member with several health care organizations. Service learning is educational pedagogy that connects academics with community service which will help me to build self-efficacy, develop values in common goods, and ability to work in groups and also as a leader.

2) Before class on Sept. 17 or 19 (“2: Quality of Service”) (before class)

Record the 5 criteria that Indritz and Hadsall identified for assessing the quality of service, and add a few comments about how you might use these to assess your SL service this semester.

Entry: The principle dimensions use to judge quality of service according to Indritz and Hadsall are: Tangibles, Reliability, Responsive, Assurance and Empathy.

I would like to do my service learning by maintaining relationship, being loyal to provide service routinely and will achieve impression of truth by giving quality service at the site.

3) About your site (after your first visit to your site) (“3: First site visit”) (Sept. 27)

After your orientation session or initial meeting at your site, record the following information in your online journal:

Your first impressions of your site

What you hope to accomplish (service) and learn this semester

Entry: My site for service learning is Seven Hill Carter School. I met Miss Lisa Moore and she toured the school with my other colleagues who also have the same site. I liked the school environment and ambiance and came to know that it is elementary school governed by the private groups. I am going to teach science subject to 8th standard and will implement my knowledge my helping students in their difficulties in true way.

I will communicate with MR. George who is science teacher for 8th standard and will know how things going there. It’s kind of new experience for me because I never had been to service learning before.

4) After class on Sept. 24 or 26 (“4: Communication”) (Sept. 27)

Indicate some concrete things you do or will do to enhance your communication with others.

Entry: So, on Tuesday I had my class with students and I introduced me and get familiar with them. The class is wonderful and we had some learning on Solubility on different substances. I communicate with students asking them how they are familiar with subject. I helped them in making draft of what they learned in class. I asked them to focus on main points rather to remember the whole thing.

5) After class on Oct. 1 or 3 (“5: RCA”) (Oct. 4)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion of Root Cause Analysis.

Entry: Root cause analysis is the driving factor to find the cause from the beginning to the end of process. It is the stepwise process having five different “Y’s”. One can question where it went wrong. Pharmaceutical Industries implies these “Y” during their investigation during troubleshooting in any process.

6) Before class on Oct. 8 or 10 (before class)

Be prepared to identify the most important things you think a health care professional should know about an ethnic group or culture of your choosing – either your own, or one you are especially familiar with or interested in.  Identify the group, and make some notes about this group.  Feel free to agree or to disagree with points made in the assigned readings, especially if you are especially familiar with this group.

Entry: Health care plays an important in every culture. In some cultures, there are some restrictions, or we can say it kind of conservative beliefs. Someone unable to express their feeling that leads to miscommunication with the health care provider. Typically, females are not comfortable with male doctors in specific culture, so they avoid consulting to them which affects their life in need. According to me it’s not fair if culture affects health care profession.

7) After class on Oct. 8 or 10 (Oct. 11)

In your online journal, describe what you learned about various ethnic groups/cultures in this week’s class.

Entry: Different ethnic groups have different beliefs. It depends on the region you live, tradition, living style, food and mainly the culture. Food can be reason for the health, if in one region use to have non vegetarian and unhealthy foods having fatty substance or food that not processed properly can lead to serious health problems.

8) After class on Oct. 15 or 17 (“8: Discussion #1”) (Oct. 18)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion. (For the week when you are one of the discussion leaders, you do not need to describe what your learned.  Simply note, “I was a discussion co-leader.”)

Entry: During this week in-class discussion, my colleagues describe the situations on pros and cons where they are doing service learning at community schools. They all point out how to dissolve negative stigma, empowering youth, protesting some cultural and belief issues in society and how to act on hot issues or tackle the situation in life.

9) After class on Oct. 22 or 24 (“9: Discussion #2”) (Oct. 25)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion. (For the week when you are one of the discussion leaders, you do not need to describe what your learned.  Simply note, “I was a discussion co-leader.”)

Entry: During this week in class discussion, I learned how to manage things or to behave with the little kids as my colleagues do their sites at public school dealing with lower grades students as in kids. Dealing with the kids I major barrier as we have to understand their feelings, have to think as of them and how to engage them in class activities. Some of the kids wants to be at their own don’t like if some one disturbs or stops them do what they want to. So, to avoid this barrier we have to give them a deal as in giving them their favorite things, fruits, toys, candies etc.. so that they get engage in activities during class.

10) Progress at your site (“10: Site Entry #2”) (Oct. 25)

Make an entry about your work at your site, following the SOAP guidelines.  For example, you may write about: what work you have done (as concretely as possible), what you have learned, any significant successes or problems, reflections on issues raised by your visits, and any other noteworthy comments.

Entry: My service site is at seven hill charter school. I used to help students in science subject for grade 7. We had performed couple of lab work on solubility of different molecules and how evaporation and condensation take place from cool-aid solution. I work with Mr. George; he is an amazing person. I help in setting up the equipment’s and help student to understand the procedure and the principle behind the topic. I observed healthy atmosphere with students and professor. They are also very flexible with me. One thing I didn’t like is couple of students behave strange as if they are at their home. Doing things according to them not listen to professor also. Cell phones should not be allowed, I mean they really need it?

11) After class on Oct. 29 or 31 (“11: Discussion #3”) (Nov. 1)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion. (For the week when you are one of the discussion leaders, you do not need to describe what your learned.  Simply note, “I was a discussion co-leader.”)

Entry: I was a discussion co-leader.

12) After the seminar on Nov. 5 or 7 (“12: Discussion #4”) (Nov. 8)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion. (For the week when you are one of the discussion leaders, you do not need to describe what your learned.  Simply note, “I was a discussion co-leader.”)

Entry: During this week in class discussion, the dedicated group of the week discussed about African community education after school program. Refugee students face education gaps struggling for English language as English is a second language. Here in United States students are group depending on their age for class and not by their education qualification for refugee students. So, this type of education system can also act as barrier in education.

13) After the seminar on Nov. 12 or 14 (“13: Discussion #5”) (Nov. 15)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion. (For the week when you are one of the discussion leaders, you do not need to describe what your learned.  Simply note, “I was a discussion co-leader.”)

Entry: This week my colleagues discussed about behaviors in small kids. What are the different things to be done to change behavior or attitude of kids during school and after school? So we discussed different thing like teachers should be little bit strict, parents also plays an important role and should do some social activities in community and sports will also help them to act professionally as team unity.

14) After the seminar on Nov. 19 or 21 (“14: Discussion #6”) (Nov. 22)

Describe what you learned from this week’s in-class discussion. (For the week when you are one of the discussion leaders, you do not need to describe what your learned.  Simply note, “I was a discussion co-leader.”)

Entry: This week one of the assigned group discussed problems with Autism. There are different programs to support Autism like Employment support program, Group support program, Community based support programs Day habitation support programs. They funded by government or by ass health. Community based support program and Day habitation programs are used to built self-estimate. They are trained to work for earning. They understand the sign language and gesture. They are addressed as participants and not as patients.

15) After your last visit to your site (“15: Final Entry: service and learning”) (Dec. 6)

Describe your most significant service accomplishments, and the most important things you learned from your experiences.  Consider evaluating your service based on the criteria of Indritz and Hadsall (page 6).

Entry: For me it was totally new and different experience as I never had been to this kind of service before. Helping others in their studies feels something special though it was difficult as we have to be very accurate and precise of what we are sharing as an knowledge to others. We can’t be fake or have less knowledge of specific topics given to discuss.

The principle criteria use to judge quality of service according to Indritz and Hadsall are: Tangibles, Reliability, Responsive, Assurance and Empathy. I completed my service learning by maintaining relationship, being loyal providing service routinely and achieved impression of trust by giving quality service at the site. I have maintained reliability of students on me by being punctual and clearing their doubts.

IPE

Interprofessional activity is a practice that occurs when health care provider work with people within their own profession, with the people outside their profession. It is the collaborative practice around the world identifies successful collaborative teamwork. IPE may also occur as co-curricular (voluntary for students to participate) activities to complement what students learned and/or participated in during their didactic curriculum.

During the session we were in groups of 5-6 students from different profession and while conversation and performing task with them, I found more interesting other than my profession is Nursing. Here in MCPHS I am P-1 student from pharmacy department and in my group, I have one nursing student and others from different professions. I had great discussion with nursing student about their profession and I came to that here in MCPHS it is sixteen-month course post bachelor’s. The standard-length program is four to six years with bachelor’s and Master’s.

The nursing profession is an advocacy in the care of individual, families, communities and populations. They have the wide role in health care profession like participation in patient centered medical rounds, reconcile home and hospital medications. They can administer medications and immunizations. They can also change field of practice within profession without returning to school or residency training. Practice using evidenced based medicine and assist patients with orientation and mobility issues. Verifies patient identification and that the requested examination correlates with the symptoms and clinical history. They adapt the protocol according to the patient's disease process or condition.

Finally I conclude my discussion stating that MCPHS University has a legacy built on the pursuit of excellence in healthcare education and commit to training professionals for the future of the exciting, ever-expanding healthcare industry helping us to  achieve our career goals.
