| Please describe/comment as to why you choose the competencies?: | I attended the Pain Symposium held by Mercy Health St. Rita's Medical Centre. This meeting touched on competencies including foundational knowledge and essentials for practice and care. It covered foundational knowledge because there was lots of background information on pain such as neuropathic vs nociceptive vs other types of pain. It also covered essentials for practice and care since many patients that come into the pharmacy are looking to alleviate pain. This presentation talked about different options that can be utilized for pain and also provided a really good understanding of pain, where it originates, and how it is transmitted. |
| What knowledge and skills from the program will you apply to your practice ?: | I learned many different aspects of pain. For example, the first session of the meeting was focused on fibromyalgia. In that I learned that each one point increase in fibromyalgia led to a 9 mg greater oral morphine requirement during acute hospitalization. There is also a 20-25% greater likelihood of failing to respond knee or hip arthroplasty. This is just one example of how medications need to be adjusted when disease state progresses. |
