I belong to a very small town in India, Punjab. I had a simple yet happy childhood. I moved to the United States in 2010 with the family. The dreams of the beautiful future ahead didn’t last for too long. My mother suffered from depression and pasted away on my eighteenth birthday with an unexpected heart attack. She didn’t get to see me walking down to receive my diploma. I was the first one in the family to even graduating high school. At such a young age, I wasn’t prepared to take up the responsibility of my household since I was the only female left in the family along with my elder brother and father. I had to drop my very first semester of college since I had to go to India for my mother’s funeral. It was a very hard time for the family. But I didn’t want to give up on my education. I held myself together and started college. I was very proud that I was able to handle my academic stress, as well as, manage the house at the same time.
For the first couple of years of college, I didn’t get a chance to be involved in extracurricular activities. I even had to drop the Fall 2016 semester for family emergencies. But after I got back from the break, I tried to involve myself in clubs and organizations as much as I could.
Looking back at my journey makes me realize how strong of an individual I came out to be. I wanted to repay my parent’s hard work. Therefore, I decided to continue my education and set my career in order to secure the future, as well as, give it back to society.
