My Bio: Holden Young

I was born and raised on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and completed my undergraduate degree in General Science at the University of Oregon. Prior to beginning my APPE rotations, I was able to complete my Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Roseman University.

For the 2021 cycle, I am pursuing post-graduate opportunities in pharmaceutical industry. Currently, my career interests include both Regulatory and Medical Affairs. I am adamant about accomplishing work that positively impacts and provides value for patients across varying therapeutic areas.

As I’ve progressed through my PharmD/MBA program at Roseman, I’ve become passionate about mentorships. I believe that as a healthcare professional it is imperative to have the ability to act as both mentor and mentee in order to achieve consistent success over the course of your career. Having others to both teach and learn from, allows us to not only understand the relevant work that is being done within our industry but also contribute to its progression over the long term.

Interprofessional Education (IPE): Holden Young

Roseman University IPE Activities

Over the course of four days during the P2 school year, the pharmacy program collaborated with students from Roseman's nursing school and Touro University's Doctor of Osteopathic program.

This course was designed to introduce students to the basic principles and knowledge regarding interprofessional collaboration and education across health professions. We focused on the four core competencies set forth by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative Practice (IPEC). These core competencies include values and ethics for interprofessional practice, Roles and Responsibilities for Collaborative Practice, Interprofessional Communication Practices, and Interprofessional teamwork and team-based practice. These competencies were practiced through learning activities in the curriculum and carried into future practice.

Continuing education or professional development is required in many fields, including all healthcare providers, teachers, insurance professionals, financial advisors, accountants, architects, engineers, emergency management professionals, school administrators, attorneys, and more. The continuing education unit (CEU) is described as ten hours of participation in an education program.

How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies "originals": thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals — including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says. "You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones."

Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation? Of course not. Why, then, do we rush students through education when they haven't always grasped the basics? Yes, it's complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace.

Some of us learn best in the classroom, and some of us ... well, we don't. But we still love to learn, to find out new things about the world and challenge our minds. We just need to find the right place to do it, and the right community to learn with. In this charming talk, author John Green shares the world of learning he found in online video.

Seventy thousand years ago, our human ancestors were insignificant animals, just minding their own business in a corner of Africa with all the other animals. But now, few would disagree that humans dominate planet Earth; we've spread to every continent, and our actions determine the fate of other animals (and possibly Earth itself). How did we get from there to here? Historian Yuval Noah Harari suggests a surprising reason for the rise of humanity.

Investors tend to think in daily and quarterly numbers, leading to a system that can harm the future health of the economy and planet. Michelle Greene explains how the Long-Term Stock Exchange is reimagining public markets by holding companies to forward-thinking standards of diversity and inclusion, employee investment and environmental responsibility -- and generating better outcomes for everyone involved.

After a childhood speech impediment left him struggling to read, Jordan learned strategies from world leading speed readers to dramatically enhance his reading ability. Jordan now helps others unleash their potential to learn anything faster. Because he knew that spending hours reading books and watching seminars was not as effective as it could be. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success.

In 2014, the world avoided a global outbreak of Ebola, thanks to thousands of selfless health workers -- plus, frankly, some very good luck. In hindsight, we know what we should have done better. So, now's the time, Bill Gates suggests, to put all our good ideas into practice, from scenario planning to vaccine research to health worker training. As he says, "There's no need to panic ... but we need to get going."
