My Bio: Lindsey Bakewell Kennedy
Lindsey Bakewell Kennedy, School Counseling Intern
I first felt the call to education when I was in high school. Upon graduation, I completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Mathematics Education. After being in the classroom for four years as a high school math teacher, my career path changed as I discovered a passion for post-secondary planning and advising. I have over ten years of combined experience working as an admissions counselor and as a high school advisor. I currently work as the College & Career Advisor at two high schools in a rural school district. While working, I have completed the coursework and field experiences for my Masters in School Counseling. I am excited to soon begin my journey as a professional school counselor.
I live in North Carolina with my husband and our two children: a seven-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son. In my spare time, I love to read and run. My family loves baseball, and each summer we plan our travels around visiting a MLB ballpark. It has been a fun way to see different parts of the country. I am thankful for a career that allows me to be a professional and also a mom.

The attached School Counseling Brochure has several sections outlining the identity, role, and services of a school counselor. I detail examples of direct and indirect services; initiatives to promote equity; and programming to support students academically, socially/emotionally, and in their career development. This artifact demonstrates the Foundation standard of articulating the school counselor identity.

Both of the attached Ethical Vignettes were completed during Summer 2021 in COSC 501 Professional, Ethical, and Legal Issues in School Counseling. These artifacts demonstrate my ability to apply and adhere to the legal and ethical codes of the school counseling profession. In the Ethical Vignette: Duty to Warn, I analyze the ethical dilemma of a counselor's duty to report, warn, and protect when there is knowledge of a threat. I use legal statutes and ethical guidelines to discuss a counselor's call to action in order to prevent danger or harm. In the Ethical Vignette: Professional Boundaries, I explore the ethical dilemmas of dual-relationships and gift-giving.

Counseling Prevention & Intervention
While completing COSC 611 Counseling Children and Adolescents in Schools: Social Emotional Development and Exceptionalities, I learned about the importance of understanding developmental norms to inform my selection of appropriate interventions for students with exceptionalities. In the attached paper, I provide an overview of the developmental norms and the federal legislation for students with disabilities. I also discuss the role of a school counselor in delivering theoretically sound interventions for students with disabilities and students that are gifted. As further evidence of my commitment to meeting the needs of students with exceptionalities, I completed the Dyslexia Awareness training from the Virginia Department of Education.

Throughout my field experiences, self-evaluation and reflection have become critical elements of my professional practice. After viewing a video recording of an individual counseling session from my practicum and again during my internship, I evaluated my use of counseling skills with a transcription and a self-assessment. I have attached both documents for each field experience. This practice of self-evaluation allowed me to reflect on the session and further develop my skills for the future.

In the Cultural Background Paper, which was completed during COUC 504 Multicultural Counseling, I explore my own cultural identity as an White, Anglo American female. By investigating my cultural background, I gained a deeper understanding of my beliefs and attitudes, as they could affect my competence as a counselor. I also discuss my view on social justice and cultural advocacy. Through the exercise of writing this paper, I demonstrate my self-awareness and skills needed to serve a diverse population of students.

In my Virtual Field Experience Multicultural Journal Entry, I evaluate two different Christian schools with the lens of spirituality as a component of cultural diversity. Also in the journal entry, I assess my own multicultural competence using the Holcomb-McCoy checklist. I discuss how a counselor's identity and theoretical approach should be adapted to address the unique needs of each student.

During my practicum, I had the opportunity to attend the State of the Child Conference, sponspored by Smart Start of Yadkin County. The conference focused on the challenges and needs of families in the local area during the first 2,000 days of their children's lives. The attached flyer and handouts (with my handwritten notes on page 6) show the topics discussed. By attending the conference, I learned more about the diverse needs in my community and felt challenged to take action steps, such as being educated on available resources, collaborating with other support organizations, and improving my skills for working with children with disabilities.

Assessment
Prior to taking COSC 622 Assessment and Evaluation in School Counseling, I was not familiar with the assessment tool of a genogram. After completing the class, I learned how to use the technology program GenoPro, and I also learned how to interpret the diagram. I am now more comfortable using a genogram to evaluate a student's unique background, make inferences about the student's needs, and assess for barriers in the student's development. To view a video narration of this presentation, there is a link in the speaker notes of Slide 1.
