Write Reflection Here:: | My first IPPE at the VA Boston I was able to shadow and learn about various medications for medical disorders, help perform medication review therapies, vaccines, and learn about monoclonal antibodies. We were fortunate to serve veterans at the hospital. I also learned about various institutional procedures such as taking orders from physicians, attend medical rounds, and observe vaccination clinic for flu and COVID. I have very positive feelings about the work environment, the teams communications, as well as the overall workflow of the pharmacy at the VA. I also learned more about drug-drug interactions, drug allergies, and dosing for various types of medications within the institution. Since I have a good experience, I want to pursue clinical pharmacy positions to help patients with disease management, pharmacotherapy, immunizations, and inpatient wards. Because of this VA rotation, I am leaning towards clinical pharmacy as part of my career plan. |

Write Reflection Here:: | I initially want to become a pharmacist because my grandfather had cancer. At the community rotation, I was exposed to other disease states such as schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and pain management. I spent a lot of my time with stocking medications such as Birth controls, pain management, diabetes, hypertension and creams. And I took prescription over the phones for a variety of issues such as general anxiety, fungal Infections, gastrointestinal disorders. The retail pharmacy exposed me to different disease states and a variety of patients with diseases and medications that I never experienced before. I like the parts of the pharmacy where they dispensed birth controls, and giving out medications for allergies, cold, diabetes, and hypertension. The parts of the pharmacy that I do not like is rude customers yelling at the technicians or the staff. Personally, I came to pharmacy school with the goal of disease and cancer prevention but I was exposed to the dispensing of so much mental-health- care drugs. I think community retail pharmacy is an interesting for me but I may pursue a part-time retail pharmacy job. I enjoyed the part and was glad to help patients with vitamins and cough medications at the OTC isle for constipation. Community pharmacy exposes me to many diverse patients. I saw more than just the top 200 medications but I was surprise to learn that so many patients are on anti-depressants and pain medications. In the future I would like to own a pharmacy some day or work in a hospital. |

Write Reflection Here:: | This was my first time- ever or shadowing a retail a pharmacy. I thought that mostly pharmacies would be filling mostly internal medicine/family medicine prescriptions. However, I was surprised to have handle lots of mental health care drugs such as sertraline, lurisadone, and fluoxetin.I also came across many medications that I never saw such as cevimeline, for Sjogren syndromes, and biktarvy (bictegravir, emtricitabine, tenofovir, for HIV and Entrusto for heart failure.I was surprised and important to be able to help patients with these conditions because it is very rare that we typically not see every day. I feel and saw that everyone is overwhelmed when there are thousands of prescriptions being filled everyday for such a high-volume workload CVS in Downtown Boston. I also shadowed another pharmacist when they took prescription over the phone for Fluconazole 150 mg. I feel that we are overwhelmed with prescriptions and that everyone is just trying to the workload. It can be challenging for someone new to handle large volume of prescriptions. I wish I could have been more efficient and more accurate when pulling prescriptions. However, I also felt happy to know that I help patients with heart disease, diabetes, because my relatives have those conditions. I want to be able to be more efficient and accurate. |
This quarter has been a challeginging one for the personally. I struggled with organic chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. I have 2 B’s and 3 C’s so far. My Well-being has had its ups and down. I have cut back on a lot of fast food recently but I have not exercised very well or struggled to keep up. The stress of the Spring Quarter had piled up on me a bit. I have been sleeping better lately. I need to improve at eating healthier diets and limiting fatty food intake. However, I currently find this very challenging.
My-well being has hit a barrier due to its schedule limits and the stress that I’ve put on myself. I could become better at time management, sleep better, exercise better, and do more things in nature to unwind myself. I think that I could have better mood, better outlook, and better exercise routine to help me in my life personally.
We studied the different methods of contraceptions but heavily emphasized on the OPILL. This activity increased student's and provider awareness about the future OTC drug Opill, a progesterone only pill. Dr. Dawson highlighted that this pill can be used along with barrier type contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies. This pill does not require a prescription. The disavantages of this pill is we do not know if it's covered by insurance. It requires adherance of taking it within 2 hours of the same time each day. The best advantage of the OPILL is that patient can get it from Amazon without getting it from a prescriber or even a pharmacist.
food has been a barrier to cardiovascular health with many unhealthy fast food and lack of cost saving alternatives. We learn from our presenter that we can look at ads such as from Hannaford to
spot out cheap vegetables, fruits, and healthy snacks with coupons. Unfortunately, many supermarkets have had lots of unhealthy fatty diet, high cholesterol foods in the supermarket isles. I thought it was interting that the supermarket , although not all, have made is more easily accessible to get unhealthy fast food while people have to look a bit harder to go down the vegetable isles.
Personally, eating healthy has been a challenged for me. We learned about the DASH diet to reduce hypertension and to pick low fat foods to filled up our plates. We actually learned to avoid many fast food products, which sadly are very visible to patients and shoppers so that supermarkets can make money off of consumers. These dietitians will also be demonstrating how to make a simple, healthy meal on a budget. In the future, I will learn to avoid fast food isles and go to healthy sections and looked for coupons. In various markets, there can be dietitians on site if patients need advice at Shaw's or other supermarkets.
We learned to highlight our professional CV/ Resume and to highlight our
IPPE's and APPE's experience. One tip I learned from the CV was that we need to demonstrate value to a team. I was surprise to learn that our IPPE's and APPE's experience can help us
land a job in the industry. Previous work experience can be just as important if not more than academic GPA. We also learned that we can put our academic accomplishment in the Educational Section of the CV. We can list our honors but our college GPA no longer belongs since we attend professional school.Hobbies and interests – Especially if they refer to transferable or soft skills. Hobbies and interests can help a candidate appear more attractive on the CV . More importantly, we also learned tips on updating our Linkedin profiles, polished our resumes with the new IPPEs/APPES section. I am not really sure if this activity us useful since now in our digital era we use LInkedin/ JOB Search online via friends. Maybe in Academia it is important to have CV's and Resume but now everything has gone digital so we have to have professional linkedins profiles.
