Dear Hiring Committee,
I am writing to express my interest in a School Counselor position. I am passionate about supporting students’ academic, social-emotional, and career development, and I am excited to bring my skills, training, and dedication to a school community that values student well-being and growth.
Through my experience working with diverse groups of students, I have learned the importance of building trusting relationships, creating safe spaces, and providing individualized support. I have facilitated both individual and group counseling sessions, implemented evidence-based interventions, and collaborated with teachers, families, and administrators to ensure students receive comprehensive support. I am committed to fostering a positive school climate where all students feel seen, respected, and empowered.
I believe strongly in the role of the school counselor as an advocate. I strive to promote equity, inclusivity, and resilience in every interaction, and I work diligently to meet students where they are while helping them achieve their full potential. My approach is grounded in empathy, cultural responsiveness, and the use of data to guide decisions and interventions.
My myCred portfolio reflects my professional growth, counseling philosophy, and practical experiences, and I hope it demonstrates my readiness to contribute meaningfully to a school counseling team. I would welcome the opportunity to further discuss my commitment to student success and how my background aligns with the goals of a school community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Jimmia Trapp
The Kaltura video Counseling session below serves as evidence of my competency in Counseling Prevention, and Intervention. Within this session I was able to demonstrate various counseling skills such as active listening, reflecting feelings and using open-ended questions. I was able to help the student identify emotions, explore coping skills and develop a goal to effectively move forward. This session also highlights my preventative approach by helping the student build skills before challenges escalate. This artifact highlights my growth as a school counselor and my commitment to building a supportive, student-centered counseling session.

I completed a cultural competency training, which highlights my ability to understand, respect and support students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This training allowed me to become aware of my own biases, develop culturally responsive counseling practices, and identify strategies for advocating for equality in the school setting. This artifact reflects my commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and demonstrates my proactive approach to advocacy as a school counselor.
This artifact is one that I use with students right before any individual counseling session. This demonstrates the assessment competency because the Basic Emotions Assessment provides immediate data regarding a student’s emotional state when they enter my office. This information helps me pinpoint barriers that are affecting them social, emotionally and academically. Due to using this assessment to guide my decisions, plan interventions, and monitor progress over time, I am applying assessment practices to understand student need and support academic success.
For this artifact, I created a PowerPoint presentation presenting the results of a needs assessment I conducted by collecting teacher feedback on what student’s need from the school counseling program. This demonstrates the Research and Evaluation competency because it shows my ability to gather, analyze, and present data in a meaningful way to inform counseling decisions. By summarizing teacher input, I was able to identify priority areas for lessons, small groups, and interventions. The PowerPoint highlights how I used research and evaluation to guide program planning and communicate findings to stakeholders effectively. This artifact reflects my commitment to using evidence-based, student-centered strategies to enhance counseling services.
This artifact is a Growth mindset pre/posttest assessment given to students who participated in a guidance lesson unit that I administered to 10th grade students at my intern site. The group focused on developing positive academic beliefs, perseverance, and effective learning strategies. The assessments were used to measure changes in student’s mindset and motivation when it comes to academics over the course of the group.
For this artifact, I collaborated with school staff and a student’s family to facilitate a mental health referral. This demonstrates the Collaboration and Consultation competency because it required effective communication, coordination, and consultation with multiple stakeholders to support the student’s well-being. This artifact reflects my ability to collaborate, consult, and advocate for students to ensure they receive timely and comprehensive support.
Leading a Parent/Team Meeting is a strong example of the Leadership competency due to it requiring me as the “school counselor” to take initiative, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and advocate for student needs. Within the Kaltura video linked below I was able to spearhead a collaborative process that directly impacted the students academic, social-emotional and behavioral success.
