While working on the portfolio project for my Torts & Remedies class I achieved several of my Institutional Outcomes. I utilized current technology and resources to locate and evaluate information needed to accomplish a goal, and then communicated my findings in visual, written and/or oral formats. I was able to transfer knowledge, skills, and behaviors acquired through formal and informal learning and life experiences to new situations and employed strategies for reflection on learning and practice in order to adjust learning processes for continual improvement. From my work on this project I gained knowledge and experience with preparing and draft legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, briefs, and memorandums that are relevant to tort law and claims. I am learning to navigate through my home state government pages. Finding the law and applying it to my issues is something I will need more work and practice with. These assignments are beneficial in showing me my strengths and weaknesses. I believe all the assignments for this class, as well as the discussion boards, and portfolio project are all tied into helping gain knowledge and experience in the paralegal field and meeting my outcomes. This portfolio project allowed me to be a paralegal working in a firm and needing to perform the duties that would be asked of me.
ViewI achieved the most of the same Institutional outcomes while working on my Torts and Remedies portfolio project as I did this project along with establishing methods of inquiry and mathematical reasoning to form conclusions and make decisions and participating in social, learning, and professional communities for personal and career growth. I am realizing more and more that research is a big part of the paralegal field. Your time is limited to how much you can spend on each case, so you need to make sure you are making the most of your time while doing your research. The research plan helped me to accomplish this. I was able to draft motions, memorandums, briefs, and a letter to the client, further gaining knowledge and completing my course outcomes. I have found memorandums to be the easiest and that I am perfecting on my briefs. The advice I would offer to a student starting this project would be time management. Time management is key and the most important to meeting your deadlines and not stressing yourself out trying to balance your schoolwork with life and your current employment.
ViewThe Institutional Outcomes I gained from this project were to transfer knowledge skills and behaviors acquired through formal and informal learning and life experiences to new situations. I utilized appropriate current technology and resources to locate and evaluate information needed to accomplish a goal and then communicate findings in visual written and oral formats. Employed strategies for reflection on learning and practice for continual improvement in the learning processes . I was able to follow established methods of inquiry and mathematical reasoning to form conclusions and make decisions. I also participated in social learning and professional communities for personal and career growth. In this project I learned how you should name your law firm, the types of law firms, how to identify each member of the firm and their roles, the process for handling a case within the firm and the billing practices. This knowledge gave me a better idea of how a law firm works. From the organizational leaders to the administrative work effective law firm management is about more than just practicing law. I learned how to use case management software and the importance of keeping track of my time as a paralegal.
Training ManualThe Institutional Outcome I achieved was participate in social, academic, professional communities for individual growth and to function as a citizen of a multicultural world. Knowing where I stand with my education, knowledge, skills, and professionalism has helped me get my life in order to continue on this path to have a successful career as a paralegal. Taking the ACT workkeys assessments has helped me realize I am workforce ready with the skills I need in workforce documents mathematics and graphic literacy. Knowing where I stand with my education knowledge skills and professionalism will help me have a successful career in the paralegal field. I will need to work on interpersonal skills including verbal and nonverbal communication, teamwork, conflict resolution and having a positive attitude.

Improve my time management skills to juggle college, work, and my home/family life. My work schedule for the last year has recently changed and I have taken on more responsibility. My courses and assignments seem to get longer and require more of my time and expertise. I feel like all I do is work, school, cook, clean, and sleep. I am feeling pressure and stress lately. I need to work on goals and a schedule to manage my time and hopefully take away some of the stress. It all starts with a regular balanced schedule.
As a personal goal I need to work on being more comfortable and confident during an interview. I need to work on selling myself and my abilities to the employer. As a professional goal I need to learn how to be an effective interviewer. It recently has become part of my job duties and responsibilities as a manager at my current position to interview potential employees. I want to learn what to look for in the individual and what are the right questions to ask.
