SPPD III Leadership Reflection

As a leader of this week's session, the first skill that I consciously utilized was ensuring that every member felt respected and valued. Whenever a team member expressed their opinion or shared an idea, I actively listened to their voice and tried to understand what their perspectives were. By this, I believe that I was able to make an environment that everyone felt respected. Moreover, I supported the team member's opinion by adding my thoughts and insights to their idea. This approach validated the team member and encouraged everyone to participate. If the members feel supported, they will be able to express their opinions comfortably which will build synergy. Indeed, I believe that if the leader respects the team members, the team members will respect the leader too.

Another leadership skill that I utilized was the ability to positively influence the team members. I consistently demonstrated this by actively engaging with the professor to gather additional information about the patient. This action inspired other team members to contribute additional questions and ideas. Moreover, when we faced uncertainty regarding the patient's specific disease state, I consistently express my thought and explain my reason, despite the possibility of being incorrect, however this approach encouraged team members to express their perspectives continuously. By creating an environment where all opinions are valued, we were able to find a way and address the issue.

On the other hand, I was able to view my weakness in leadership skills. I encountered the challenge with delegation. Despite understanding the importance of distributing the roles among team members, I found myself hesitating to assign responsibilities to everyone. My hesitation came from the concerns about whether the team members would be satisfied with the roles leading to inefficiency and potentially leading to mistrust to the leader. However, recognizing my weakness in the leadership skills was a valuable learning experience which I could overcome in the future.

Another weakness that I identified was solving conflicting ideas between team members. During a decision making process regarding the medication for a patient, two conflicting ideas came out. However, I found myself hesitating to address the issue. My hesitation came from the fear of exacerbating tension or being perceived as biased towards one side. Also, I was concerned that intervening could potentially hurt the team member's feeling in the process of collaboration. Indeed, I want to be more supportive and trustworthy leader in the future.

Write Reflection Here:: Throughout the IPPE institutional rotation, I was able to step closer to my career goal. I wanted to be a healthcare professional who is trustworthy and friendly. As an institutional rotation, there were number of pharmacist in the pharmacy department. I was able to observe various roles of the pharmacist in the hospital setting and interact with every pharmacist. I learned how the pharmacist communicate with other healthcare providers based on their knowledge and skills. Whenever the outpatient came for their medications, pharmacist welcomed and counseled the patient very friendly. By looking at this, I wanted to be a pharmacist who is trustworthy to the patient. I believe that one of the pharmacist job is to cure the patient's heart, not only curing by dispensing medications. There are problems that cannot be cured via medications and it is very crucial to listen to the patient's words and treat their feelings too. In the near future, I want to be a pharmacist who is trustworthy and cures their heart.

Write Reflection Here:: Whenever I went to deliver medications to each department, I was able to feel various settings in each department. Within the hospital, mainly it has 3 departments that I go to deliver, department of public health, department of mental health, and department of correction. I was able to see the flow of each department and I was also able to interact with the nurses whenever I went to the med room. It was very interesting to see each individual health professional's role in the hospital setting and their collaboration to treat the patients. As a pharmacist intern, I was able to view the pharmacist role in the hospital setting and I felt that the pharmacist plays a huge part in the hospital. One of the key skill in the hospital setting is communication as pharmacist need to communicate with physicians, nurses, and patients etc. I will improve my communication skills to be a trustworthy pharmacist.

Write Reflection Here:: During the last 4 weeks of community rotation, I learned a lot about myself, and it was a time to develop myself to get closer to my goals. As I was working in a community setting, there were numerous situations to interact with the patients. From the past, I wanted to be a healthcare professional to treat patients not only by providing medications, but also to treat their heart. There were some patients who talked about their daily life to me, not their symptoms. Whenever I listened closely to their words, people thanked me just by listening their story. Indeed, I felt that there are cases where you can treat patients just by listening and relating to their story. Providing medication could treat the illness, however it will not treat their heart. In the near future, I want to be a pharmacist who can treat a patient's illness, but most importantly their heart.

Write Reflection Here:: Over the past two weeks of the community rotation, one of the most meaningful and engaged event was providing flu shot to the patient. As it is a flu season now, there were many patients who came to get flu shots. I was little bit nervous at first, however as I provided more flu shots, I was able to do it more easily. Providing flu shots gave me positive influence on me because I was able to interact with patients face to face. Also, when there were patients who feared needles, I made them to feel comfortable and whenever the patient said thank you, I felt proud of myself and worthwhile that I have an ability to keep people safe. As the event involves communication between the patient and healthcare provider, I learned that if I make the patient comfortable and safe, the patient will feel comfortable and safe. Indeed, I will do the best to be a healthcare professional who is trustworthy and reliable to the patients.
