Outreach: Type of Service Learning Activity: | IPPE Clinic |
Outreach: Please describe the activity. What did you do?: | I was at South Park clinic on 07/27/23 from 6pm-9pm. At this clinic, I worked with medical students under the supervision of Dr. Vanic who is a physician. We saw patients who lived in the homeless shelter who needed care but could not afford to or had no PCP. The medical students were in charge of assessing the patient while I was around if the patients had any questions about their medications or if the med students had drug related questions as well. While there, I did a med rec on a patient which came in handy as I am currently being trained as a medication history technician at my job so I was able to use my work skills at this clinic. I was able to obtain a patient's medication history by asking them a variety of questions. I had a great time at South Park. The patients were very grateful for our service and it was great to work as an inter professional team. |

Outreach: Please summarize your learning outcomes and reflect upon your personal development: | I learned how to collaborate with an interprofessional team in real time with a real patient. In my experience in UST, we have always done written patient cases so this experience really helped me use my skills for a real patient. It also helped me learn all the team members roles on the care of the patient and where I fit in the team. |
Outreach: Please summarize the benefit or outcomes for the community partner (patient/public): | I was able to complete medication reviews for the patients who came to the clinic. I was also able to collaborate with the team and participated in the patient's treatment plan. The patients I saw at the clinic were able to be treated right away and were extremely grateful for the care they were able to receive. |

Please describe your interprofessional experience and how you contributed to the health care team. Include the location, describe the situation and what you learned from this experience. : | At the South Park Clinic, I met a man who came to the clinic for having pain. I worked with a doctor and medical students. I obtained a medication. history list from the patient. In this experience, the man was asking me questions about his medications as he was confused about some of them. I was able to answer his questions and concerns. He was given medicine to treat his pain right away from the clinic. I was essential to the team as I made sure that the OTC medication he would receive would not interact with his other medications. It was a good experience for me to practice counseling and to practice collaborating with an interprofessional team to treat a patient. |
