Nafisa Iqbal
PharmD Candidate, St. John's University, 2027
|
Hello, my name is Nafisa Iqbal. I am currently a student in the PharmD program at St John's Univerity.
My initial interest in Pharmacy began when I learned about my grandfather being the first Bangladeshi pharmacist in the United States. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about the field. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to gain direct exposure to the field since my dad works at a pharmacy as well. At the age of 16, I began volunteering on Saturdays and was able to get firsthand experience by witnessing the work-life of a pharmacist. This is where I finalized my decision to pursue Pharmacy. As I watched the pharmacist counsel patients on how to take their medication, it reminded me of the days when my dad helped me do the same at home. There were many instances where I was sick, and my dad's knowledge of medicine helped me quickly pick up both the purpose and implications of the most common over-the-counter medications. After experiencing the knowledge of Pharmacy from my father and grandfather, I knew that a career in Pharmacy is how I can serve others. Someday when I establish a career in Pharmacy, I hope to make it a welcoming environment for my patients where they feel safe and heard.

Lab was a lot of fun this semester. I enjoyed all the experiments we performed.

PAS was an extremely informative course. We learned a lot about the pharmacy field and the kind of patients that we may have to work with.

Theology, as always, strengthened my understanding of the religious, social, and even economic aspects of health care.
CHE 1120 - INTRO GEN & ORGANIC CHEM II
Chemistry lecture this semester is very different from the first semester. There is so much more material and, in my opinion, more fast-paced. But I think I've gotten the hang out of the fast-paced nature of this class.
CHE 1121L - INTRO-GEN & ORG CHEM II LAB
Lab is a lot smaller than last semester, it allows the professor to give us an equal amount of attention which I like.
CHE 1122R - INTRO-GEN & ORG CHEM II REC
Recitation is nothing like the first semester. It is a lot more hands-on. I found it a bit challenging at first, but now I've gotten the hang of it.
CPP 1101 - INTRO TO PHARMACY PRACTICE
I think CPP is one of my favorite classes. It is a very relaxed class, and I leave class with new knowledge every time.

I was nervous about calculus because I didn't take pre-calc in high school however my professor was so welcoming and explained everything thoroughly.

Philosophy has been a rollercoaster. It made me question everything I know, which I guess is kind of the point, and I'm enjoying it so far.
THE 2300 - INTRO CATHOLIC MORAL THEOLOGY
I love my theology class this semester; everyone seems so passionate while we're doing discussions, and my professor is so kind.
ENG 1100C - CORE: LITERATURE IN GLOBAL CONT
I love my English class. Our objective is poetry which I love, and my professor is super easygoing. He is still in school himself, so I know he understands what we're going through.
CHE 1110 - INTRO TO GEN & ORG CHEMISTRY
Chemistry was also one of the classes that challenged me repeatedly. However, I enjoyed the course. It took me a while to really adust with the fast-paced aspect of this course but when I did, it felt great.
CHE 1111L - INTRO TO GEN & ORG CHEM LAB
Lab also took me a while to adjust to but eventually, I got the hang of it, and I made many friends through this course.
CHE 1112R - INTRO-GEN & ORG CHE RECITATION
Recitation was also one of those classes where I felt relaxed. My professor answered any and all questions I had, and I left the class feeling confident about the information I had learned.
PHR 1000 - INTRO SEMINAR FOR PHARMACY STU
Seminar was an extremely informational course. In this class, I was able to understand what I have to look forward to as a pharmacy major and it's helped me prepare myself.
MTH 1250C - STAT APP-PHAR/ALLIED HLTH
Statistics was the class that really opened my eyes to the reality of college. This class is when I realized that things are going to be different now, that I'm not in high school anymore. This class challenged me academically and although I didn't do as well as I hoped, it's helped me to prepare myself for future challenging courses.
DNY 1000C - GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS
DNY was one of my favorite classes last semester. We went on multiple FBLs (Field-Based Learning) and I had a great time on every single one. I had a pretty close-knit class, we would joke around with our professor and with each other. Overall it was a great class.

This class has allowed me to gain new knowledge on a religion I didn't know too much about.
FYW 1000C - ENGLISH COMPOSITION

I worked with these organizations through GivePulse. The organizations NAC’s VirtualStorytime Library and Exceptional Care for Children work with children in hospitals. Volunteers make videos of themselves reading a children’s book, later sent to the organization. They play these videos for the kids in the hospital.
I volunteered for this organization through GivePulse. While working with Cards for Hospitalized Kids, I handmade six cards with uplifting messages, which I later mailed out to the organization. The cards were given to children in hospitals.
I began volunteering at Utica pharmacy on Saturdays for 6 hours every week. I was able to get firsthand experience and witness the work-life of a pharmacist.
Description: I was a part of the varsity badminton team during my sophomore, junior, and senior high school years.
Making the team was a big accomplishment on its own. However, in my senior year, we won the conference championship—the first badminton team from my school to do so.
A pharmacist is a healthcare professional that dispenses medication and advises patients on their prescriptions. I chose pharmacy because I grew up around pharmacists. I always heard great things about the job, like its flexible work schedule. I also believe that I can help people with this job. I chose to study pharmacy at St. John's University because I heard great things about the program and the fact that my aunt graduated from the pharmacy program here at St John's. She said she loved it here.
My top five strengths are INCLUDER, POSITIVITY, ACTIVATOR, EMPATHY, AND FUTURISTIC.
I was surprised by the futuristic part of my strengths, I always considered it a weakness because I was always too worried about the future but now I realize that it can also be a strength if I let it. I plan on using these strengths to be a successful student at St. John's University. I will use my strength to make connections that will benefit me long-term. These strengths will allow me to persevere in the challenges I will come to face.
