Foundations
In this section, I have attached my ethical vignette paper. This shows my ability to use ethical standards to work through difficult situations. The paper also shows my ability to apply state laws that I must adhere to. The paper identifies how I would use the ASCA ethical standards to generate an appropriate course of action. Being able to identify what needs to be done in many different situations is imperative as a school counselor.

Counseling Prevention and Intervention
I have attached my ACT classroom guidance lesson that I completed at the high school level. This shows how I worked with my students to educate them on the scores they needed to get into their colleges and showed them what they could expect on the test. The goal of this lesson was to improve the school districts ACT scores so that more students could get into the colleges they are hoping to attend. Students also researched schools that offered their preferred major to get a head start on planning for post graduation.

Diversity and Advocacy
To celebrate diversity and advocate for students in my building, I created a classroom guidance lesson on using teamwork to build student belonging in the building. My goal of this lesson was for the students to learn about each other and their backgrounds. Working together in their diverse groups, they came up with ideas that we could use to ensure everyone feels like they belong at school. Through this lesson, I am advocating for equality in learning experiences to promote student development.

Assessment
I have attached a needs assessment power point for an assessment I completed at the high school where I currently work. The junior class completed a survey so I could determine how to best meet their needs. Through my analysis I determined academic needs were the highest and I implemented a plan to benefit the students. It is important to accurately assess the needs of students to ensure the school counseling program is performing to a high standard. Programs may then be implemented to meet the needs of all students.

Research and Evaluation
I have attached my final project on my small group on social skills for first graders. I analyzed the data to determine what small group was most needed for this group of kids. The needs assessment I gave parents is on slide six. I analyzed the data that came back to determine where the largest needs exist. Slide twelve shows the evaluation that was given to students. I analyzed the results to determine if the group was successful and where I could improve. Research showed that play therapy was successful with this age group so I incorporated games and activities to keep the students engaged.

Academic Development
During my internship, I organized a college and career week. I collaborated with colleges, military, and local apprenticeship programs and invited them into our building to talk to our students about their programs. The students were given the opportunity to ask the representatives questions they may have and learn more about post-secondary options. The representatives also talked to the counselors about their programs and what is needed to get into these programs so the counselors are better equipped to answer questions students may have. I planned this to educate students on what post secondary options they have after graduation.

Leadership
I attached the Northmont counseling brochure I created for the program here at Northmont High School. This highlights the programs we are working to incorporate into our building and the goals we hope to reach. The brochure was given out to parents to build a bridge between the counseling department and care takers at home. The brochure informs guardians of the programs available and how we assess the programs we have. When building the brochure, I collaborated with administrators and the other counselors in the building. Leadership qualities come from organizing meetings in which all collaborated and worked to build a successful program.

Field Experience Summary
Prompt 1:
Throughout my practicum and two internships, I have worked with many different age groups of children. My practicum focused on kindergarten and first grade and helped me develop the skills I needed to work with these young kids. I conducted small groups in family changes, social skills, grief, and anxiety management. This provided me with experience working with diverse students from many different backgrounds. My first internship was in a high school setting where I got more experience with classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and individual counseling with this older age group and preparing them for their post-high school plans. I was also able to work with advanced placement students and those taking college credit classes with future planning. My second internship took place in an elementary with grades two through six. I learned to work with these older elementary aged kids and developed techniques on how to keep their attention focused on the task at hand. Throughout my internships, I also worked with struggling students who needed extra support to succeed in school. The younger students do not have the attention span of the older students; therefore, they needed more hands-on activities to keep them on task along with shorter sessions. I conducted a college week in which I brought colleges in to talk to students and incorporated different trade schools and opportunities for the students who may not be ready to take on college at this point.
Prompt 2:
When working with students as a school counselor, spiritual beliefs are an important aspect of the interventions we design. I have learned that sometimes it is not obvious what a student’s beliefs are unless they are asked directly. It is important to understand the background of these beliefs to ensure that the interventions used follow each individual students religious and spiritual views. Working in a public-school setting, a school counselor cannot broach the topic of religion with a student unless the student initiates the conversation. It is important that we make the student feel comfortable and incorporate methods that are sensitive to these beliefs. If we are in a situation where we do not understand the religion or background of the student, we must educate ourselves to appropriately advocate for the student. When working with my small groups, I encountered children from many different backgrounds. Young students need to learn how to be empathetic towards others to make everyone feel welcome regardless of religious beliefs.
Prompt 3:
Throughout my internship, I worked with students from many difficult situations. I quickly learned that having the support at home to reinforce the support I provide at school was the best possible scenario. I worked with parents, giving them interventions that they could use with their child to build a strong relationship and help the child grow. When good two-way communication exists, I am better able to support the child as I am aware of what is going on at home. This communication ensures parents are more comfortable contacting me as a school counselor when the need arises. I also had experience working with the outside counselors that the school employs to support the children on a more continuous basis. I learned which students need more frequent counseling sessions and how to refer them to the professional counselor the school employed. The professional counselor and I had an open communication back and forth so that I could better support the student on days when this counselor was not in the building.
Prompt 4:
Working as a high school teacher, I was confident that the age group I would want to work with as a school counselor was high school. Through my experiences in my practicum and internship, I have started leaning more towards the elementary level. I have loved working with young children. Their eagerness to participate and talk to an adult is heartwarming. The skills I have learned during counseling sessions have helped me talk to my own students. I understand the importance of silence to encourage a student to continue to open up. Open questions, active listening, minimal encouragers, and reflection of feelings are some of the skills that I have refined through this process. Working with the other counselors in my building, I have learned when it is appropriate to seek outside help for things such as suicide risk and individual counseling. By consulting with professional counselors, I know when I need to refer a child who needs more help than I can provide. I understand the need to advocate for the profession as I see our counselors doing duties not appropriate for school counselors. I will continue to work, grow, and advocate for school counseling programs as I continue in my career.
