The mock trial was very interesting and so beneficial to me as a professional. Not only did the activity help me as a future pharmacist, but it also helped me to better understand law terminology. The mock trial was about a wrongful death petition in which a patient's death was the result of multiple medication errors being made. A nurse called in a prescription for Metolazone. An intern took the order and translated it as Methotrexate which the patient had previously been prescribed. The intern also recorded the incorrect birth date for the patient, and she also misspelled the nurse's name who phoned in the prescription. It was later discovered that the intern had not been appropriately trained for the position. The patient was hospitalized for fluid build up in her lungs and later died as a result of the overdose of medication. I was actually able to serve on the mock jury and play a role in the deliberation of the verdict. It was very interesting to see how the deliberation of a verdict in a trial actually takes place. I feel as though this opportunity aided me professionally by allowing me to practice real life situations with others.

November 13, 2020
The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy held a Personal Professional Development Speaker Series on November 13, 2020. The speaker was Don Waldron, Jr., RPh who is the owner and manager of three independent pharmacies in the city of Meridian, MS. The name of his business is Mr. Discount Drugs. Mr. Waldron talked about exciting things happening in the legislature that will greatly impact independent pharmacies. He talked about how pharmacy benefit managers play a role in independent pharmacies. This was an interesting subject to me because I did not feel like I completely understood the concept before. The point I found most interesting was that it is crucial for independent, local pharmacies to do other things to support their business as a pharmacy. He mentioned that gift shops, delis, medical supplies, and more really aid in the survival of an independent pharmacy. I am especially glad that I attended this meeting because as a pharmacy student, I tend to settle in on one area - which happens to be in the institutional setting. However, it is always a possibility that I may be employed by an independent pharmacy or even be the owner of an independent pharmacy. This meeting allowed me to grow professionally by reminding me to keep my options open.

October 3, 2019
I participated in Operation Immunization on October 3, 2019 at the Turner Center on The University of Mississippi Oxford campus. This strengthened me professionally by allowing me to work as a team with other student pharmacists and a pharmacy professor. It enhanced my communication skills by forcing me to communicate with not only my team of student pharmacists, but also those receiving the flu vaccine. This expanded my knowledge of my career options by showing me how immunizations are provided in the community setting from obtaining insurance information to providing the vaccine and information on what to expect afterwards. I feel like I grew professionally through this experience because it allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and be involved through the School of Pharmacy while interacting with non-pharmacy students along with faculty and staff of The University of Mississippi. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and cannot wait to participate in the upcoming school year/flu season. I am excited to be able to take on another role in the coming year by actually administering vaccinations. I am thankful that APhA provides this opportunity to allow myself and other student pharmacists to grow personally and professionally.

Atlanta, GA
October 18-20, 2019
I attended the APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting the weekend of October 18-20, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia. This meeting allowed me to interact with other pharmacy students from pharmacy schools throughout the southeast region. This experience strengthened me professionally through many aspects. I, along with a few of my classmates, were able to represent The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. I think it is very important to not only dress professionally but also act in a professional manner whenever representing the pharmacy program. This strengthened my communication skills by allowing me to communicate with other students from different pharmacy programs. In almost any profession, networking is essential. I enjoyed getting to listen to and watch pharmacists and other student pharmacists speak about important matters. The meeting also allowed me to connect with my classmates on a different level. This made me realize that not only is it important to connect with others outside of my program, but it is also important to connect with those that I share a classroom with on a daily basis. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and the aspects of professionalism that it showed me. This definitely helped me to be more professional.
