My Bio: Demetris Stavrinides
Pharmacy Bio: Demetris Stavrinides
My value “To strive for excellence, but also to appreciate the journey and learn from each experience” originates from my ideology that if I have a strong work ethic, not only will it make me successful, but it will also allow me to enjoy the process along the way. In addition to this, I will also be able to grow my passion for learning while utilizing my educational skills. My passion for chemistry accompanied by my interest to pursue a career in the medical field has led me to choose a career in pharmacy. Through my passion for chemistry, I discovered that what led me to fall in love with it, was my passion for learning in general. Although chemistry remains one of my favorite topics, I enjoy learning overall which I believe is a crucial skill that will allow me to thrive in my career as a student. In addition, pharmacy is an industry where there is constant learning occurring throughout the profession, which is another reason as to why my passion for learning is extremely beneficial in this industry. My vision of pharmacy practice is one that is focused on providing healthcare to my community through my knowledge of medication. Basically what I’m trying to say is that, this profession is about the people and attending to their needs. The only way that this is possible, is if pharmacists contribute their skill and knowledge into helping their communities. A goal of mine is to become a successful pharmacist that tends to the needs of my patients. Although I’m not exactly sure yet of which field of pharmacy I would like to pursue, I know that I am going to use my passion for learning combined with my societal obligation to make the world a better place through pharmaceutical healthcare. Being a pharmacist is important to me because I would like to positively impact my community by using my passion to help those in need. Some positive attributes of mine is that I am respectful, hardworking, creative, reliable, compassionate, and ambitious. I believe that all these attributes will partake in making me a successful person and pharmacist in the near future.

Lacrosse

One of my biggest accomplishments I am proud of is being a member of the Greece Lacrosse Association.
• As a member of the Greece Lacrosse Association, I get to represent Team Greece by taking part in national/international competition against other national and heritage teams. This is a big deal for me because lacrosse is one of my biggest passions. On May 3rd, 2021, I tore my ACL and Lateral Meniscus playing high school lacrosse. I thought I would never return to the athlete I was. However, after only 9 months of recovery and rehabilitation, I made my way back onto the field. Although I had a slow start back, this injury made me become relentless towards reaching my goal of playing the sport I love at a high level. I enjoyed playing the game, and I also enjoyed the process of getting back into it. After becoming the Varsity Captain, an All-Conference Athlete, and an Academic All-Conference athlete, it was safe to say my relentless hard work was paying off. So much so, that the following year, I was granted to opportunity to play for Team Greece. Despite the pain and frustration, lacrosse has always been there as a reminder that you can achieve anything with hard work and passion.

My Top five strengths and reflection: Restorative, Harmony, Competition, Analytical, and Consistency

Honestly, I wasn’t too surprised with any of my results. However, I was a little surprised with the order that they were ranked. For example, Competition came in as my third top strength. However, I consider myself to be extremely competitive in the sense that I’m always striving to deliver the best possible work/outcomes in any situation. I guess this is where my strength of being Restorative comes into play, as I love finding out what problems occur, then take the steps that are necessary in order to resolve/execute them. I would also group my strength of Consistency in here as well because I think that by executing your problems, you are made aware of the necessary steps that must be taken every time to ensure that the problem is resolved. I also believe my strength for being Analytical is crucial to have in not only the pharmaceutical industry, but in any industry overall. The ability to question ideas and invoke strategic thinking will only make you more successful anywhere in life. Lastly, a strength that I am very proud of is Harmony. I say this because teamwork and relationship building are key in any field and will only lead to better things including a positive work environment.

Pharmacy: A First year reflection

1.   Describe, in your own words, What is a pharmacist?
I believe a pharmacist is a healthcare professional who is responsible for
providing patients with the proper medication based on their needs and symptoms. They can also be responsible for creating and dispensing the medication. Pharmacist are also highly educated individuals who have much knowledge about the many different medications, their chemical components, and required dosages for each patients' unique needs. Furthermore, a pharmacist is trained with valuable communication skills used to speak with their patients getting them the help they need as well as communicating with doctors and other health professionals making sure they prescribe the correct medication.

2.  Why did you personally choose Pharmacy as your major?
I personally chose pharmacy as my major because it is a growing profession that is also very intriguing to me. Being a pharmacy major allows me to challenge myself as the coursework can be difficult. However, one of the larger reasons as to why I chose pharmacy is because it will allow me to peruse my dream goal of becoming a licensed pharmacist and being able to help people. Over the last couple of years as I have been maturing as a person, I realized that giving back to my community genuinely makes me happy and being a pharmacist will fulfill that obligation of mine. Furthermore, one of my strongest and favored subjects are chemistry and anatomy, of which, both courses are crucial to being a successful pharmacy student. Therefore I chose to become a Pharmacy major.

3. Why did you choose to study pharmacy here at St. John’s University?
I chose to study pharmacy at St. John’s University because they have one of the most reputable pharmacy programs in the northeast. I personally know 2 pharmacists who have graduated St. John’s University and they highly recommended that I attend the program. They look to be doing very successful not too long after they graduated, which is where I hope to see myself after this program. Furthermore, St. John’s Pharmacy program allows me to obtain my Doctor of Pharmacy degree in just 6 years!!! Additionally, the location of the of the university in New York opens up more opportunities for me in regards to a job placement after I obtain my degree. After discussing all of these wonderful factors I believe St. John’s University is the perfect place to go and study pharmacy.
