My Bio: Areesha Khalid
Biography
My name's Areesha Khalid. I am a student at St. Johns University and am majoring in pharmacy. I am born in Queens but have been raised in Pakistan. I am an introverted person who loves to educate themselves about various health topics. I like coming out of my comfort zone to engage with people about my interests.Personally, becoming a pharmacist is a perfect fit for everything I stand for such as helping people and to learn new things in detail. This combination is a stand point of pharmacy. Furthermore, I like to learn hands-on with my peers which is also a leading standpoint in pharmacy as it constitutes a lot of labs. Healthcare in itself is an ever-growing and evolving field, no two days are the same. As someone who enjoys learning and helping people, this formed a perfect fit as a major and a career. I also chose to become a pharmacist because growing up, I barely saw representation of my own culture in pharmacy, so I wanted to become a voice for my people.

Pharmacy: A First Year Reflection
What is a pharmacist?
A pharmacist is a healthcare professional that works to dispense medications to the patients and to educate them on their medication and its usage. Pharmacists have various responsibilities such as dispensing prescriptions, providing immunizations against various diseases such as the flu, covid 19 vaccine and so much more. Pharmacists also work to collaborate with other healthcare professionals such as
doctors and dentists to manage various medications at a certain time. A pharmacist can also provide custom medications, manage complex disease cases as well as provide patients with information about over-the-counter medication.

Why did I personally choose pharmacy as a major?
I chose pharmacy as a major because I like to solve complex problems and care for the sick. I wanted to delve into this major because it would allow for different opportunities to come my way such as becoming an industrial pharmacist and conducting research. I wanted to also study medications holistically as they would allow me to change people's lives.

Why did I choose to study pharmacy at St.John's University?
I chose to study pharmacy at St Johns because of its affiliation with a lot of professors who have an extensive background in pharmacy. Furthermore, the area in itself provides a lot of opportunities to grow as it is very diverse which is helpful for learning about different ethnicities and backgrounds as it directly correlates to becoming a pharmacist and working for different kinds of people. Similarly, I wanted to be involved in pharmacy from the get-go.I wanted to ensure that I am learning about my passion from the start and the 6 year program integrated that pharmacy aspect in comparison to other ways of becoming a pharmacist.
