The rotation taught me a lot about pharmacy and reaffirmed my decision to go into it. I learned how to check for expiration dates, make calls, pre package medications, package medications, and much more. Two events that really caught my attention that reaffirmed my decision to go into pharmacy are the following. I saw pharmacists verifying medications and could envision myself also doing that as a career. When pharmacists verify medications they go over the work the pharmacy technicians did and make sure everything is accurate and safe for the patient. This seemed interesting to me as a career, since I too can help make sure patients get their needed medications and take medications that they need to feel better, yet won't harm them. I feel this is a very important job since if someone gets the wrong medication it can lead to adverse events or even death. Another event that caught my attention was seeing pharmacists overseeing the technicians. I felt that this was a managerial type of position. I would also like to be able to help out at the pharmacy managing things. They also get to manage the pharmacy by making sure all the correct medications are in and everyone is receiving what they need and everything is under control and running smoothly and I can see myself doing this as well. |

I description: Part of packaging medications at a long term care pharmacy is when you go around and pick up medications and label them using stickers that identify the patients. This involves being able to identify the correct medication and placing the correct patients label on the medication. If the patients information does not match up with the medication, the whole process needs to be redone. II. Feelings: Prior to starting the rotation, I never thought I'd enjoy long term care pharmacies. But, after starting and experiencing it, it is helping me find something else I would be interested in, that I didn't think I was interested in before. I surprisingly enjoyed packaging medications. It helped reconfirm my decision and passion for pharmacy. III. Evaluation: I definitely have had a positive experience. It helped me reconfirm my passion for a career in pharmacy. I also would potentially be interested in working in a long term care pharmacy. IV. Analysis: I feel this way because I had a positive experience and enjoyed the internship. I hadn't considered or thought I'd like long term care pharmacy, but after my internship I am interested in it. I can see myself with a career in long term care pharmacy. V. Conclusion/Action: I may want to learn more about a career in long term care pharmacy. I may consider applying for jobs in this area of pharmacy. Even if I go into another field of pharmacy, I plan to use this experience to enhance my career as a pharmacist. |

Over the last four weeks, my decision to go into pharmacy was reaffirmed. Two specific events that stand out that reaffirmed my decision was making phone calls to patients and filling prescriptions. This was because I enjoyed helping patients by reminding them about their refills, making sure they got their medications when necessary, and helping patients have a better understanding of their medications. I helped patients by refilling their medications or faxing doctors when necessary. I helped patients understand what medications they needed by having them ask me questions regarding their medications. I made sure patients were aware that their medications were ready for pickup so patients would come get their medications when needed. This showed me the importance of making phone calls and how important it is and I enjoyed helping the patients by seeing how helpful it was to them. I enjoyed filling prescriptions as well since it showed how the pharmacist role in medicine is very important and needed. I enjoyed placing the labels on the prescriptions and making sure the patients had their medications filled correctly. |
Interprofessional Education (IPE): Shifrah Cahn
roles and responsibilities assignment
I was surprised a pharmacist does not administer medications. A pharmacist is known for being the profession that deals the most with medicines. Other professions who are not known for dealing with medicines can administer medicines, such as a an acupuncturist, whereas a pharmacist cannot. I am disappointed, since I thought that I can help my patients by administering them medications.
I was surprised that a dental hygienist can reconcile home and hospital medications, since I did not even realize that a dental hygienist dealt with patients' medications. I was surprised that a dental hygienist can reconcile my medications, which makes me nervous, since I do not know how much they are educated about this.
I thought it was a great experience to have all the professions get together. I think that this way when I am working in the field of pharmacy, I know how other fields in the healthcare field can interact with my field. Patients can get better taken care of if they have multiple people working on them with different educational backgrounds and experiences who are experienced in their fields. Knowing what other professions do would enable me to work better with others, since I know how they can work with my field and how we can work together to improve patients' outcomes. Knowing that I cannot administer medications, whereas an acupuncturist can, can enable me to have them administer the medications for my patients who need them. By knowing that a dental hygienist can reconcile home and hospital medications, I can enable them to do this for my patients. I can also learn more about other professions, such as nursing, so I can know more other professions and how they can help my patients so we can work together to help the patients more effectively. I can do this by learning about it by watching videos on the nursing profession, then taking what I learned from the videos and applying it to my patients. I can also meet with other professions, such as nurses, and ask them questions about what I learned from the videos so they can also better inform me about their professions.
