IPPE Institutional Rotation Reflection Part 2
Date: 10/27/2023
Rotation Type: Wor/Man IPPE Institutional
Comments:
Write Reflection Here:: My IPPE institutional experiences over the last 4 weeks greatly helped further and broaden my career goals. Previously before this rotation my pharmacy experience was at an independent pharmacy in Canada and my previous rotation at CVS. This rotation really showed me another aspect of pharmacy I did not previously have a lot of knowledge about. My institution rotation is a distribution center, which has various pharmacists with different roles. I am very grateful I was able to shadow my preceptor as a clinical operations pharmacist and attend meetings such as P and T. I was also able to shadow a pharmacist that works at the "pit" as she reviewed and approved medications to be filled. I was able to shadow a pharmacist that works with medication safety, and understand the processes that go into reviewing and categorizing. I was also able to shadow 2 pharmacists that work in the hospital with two different specialties/ focuses. I am very grateful for my experience as I had wanted to be able to experience a variety of possibilities for a pharmacist. These experiences have helped me to see what possibilities and things that may interest me and paths I can further explore.

Write Reflection Here:: The event or activity I would like to discuss about my rotation experiences over the past few weeks was doing vaccinations. Previously I had only done one intramuscular vaccine and one subcutaneous vaccine as practice on one of my friends during our training. Before I had done any vaccinations during my rotation, I was nervous. I asked the pharmacist on duty who asked me to vaccinate if I could watch her do the first one. After I watched the pharmacist, and she watched me do my first intramuscular vaccine I felt more confident and was able to try doing one by myself. I also watched a pharmacist do a subcutaneous vaccine before I did one by myself. I found that I was nervous but after doing the vaccinations I found it very doable. I am very grateful I have been able to do vaccinations during my rotation. I am going through a learning curve still, as I have had to try a few times or had some patients bleed etc. However, I feel more confident as I do more. I also feel more confident interacting with the patients. I feel this way because practice really does help, the patients and staff have been very kind and helpful. They provide me with positive encouragements, feedback and tips. In conclusion, I plan to take away from this experience, the initiative, and the practice I learned. I also learned to try even when I feel nervous and not be afraid to ask questions and for guidance when needed.

IPPE Community Rotation Reflection Part 2
Over the last 4 weeks I have been able to experience many new things, that have related to my career goals. I have been open to learning about different pharmacy settings and goals during our fortunate experiences to intern at different pharmacy settings. I wanted to learn more about the dynamics and roles pharmacists play firsthand. Doing this would also allow me to learn what I enjoy and might excel at helping others. During my time at CVS, I have been able to observe the different roles as the pharmacist is able to lead their team hand out roles as well as pass on what needs to be done to the next pharmacist. I have also been able to see how the pharmacy manager is able to listen to the pharmacy team, lead and encourage them. On my last day leaders of CVS came in to check on the pharmacy. I also found that very interesting. I found their job interesting as well as they listen, engage, ask questions and provide helpful feedback and tips when possible, to the team. I was also nervous to do vaccines and wasn't sure if I would enjoy doing that often. Now I can say I do and can see myself doing them often.

Write Reflection Here:: The event I am describing is when my preceptor set up the opportunity for me and the APPE student to visit the tewksbury hospital. I felt excited during this event because I had not seen the role of a pharmacist in a hospital before this experience. I enjoyed the experience, and I found it a positive experience. It was interesting to see the roundtables, the summaries and how the pharmacist contributes to the conversation with the doctors, nurses, dietitian, physical therapist and more. I feel this way because it was interesting to see the material we learned in class being discussed or shown to us in real practice as well as how much more we will learn. Based on what I learned I would be willing to learn more about what a pharmacist does in a hospital, and I am excited to learn about all the roles a pharmacist can do in many aspects.
