Write Reflection Here:: | My experience the last 4 weeks has been very beneficial for my career goals and perspective on my future. My career goals always had allignment with community pharmacy and I have always been a big fan of being in retail pharmacy. Though my pursuit is to be in the industry, I never want to lose sight of my love for retail pharmacy as I will always want to still be apart of it. One experience that made me want to still have a foot in retail pharmacy is seeing how my boss interacts with everyone. I always had aspirations to have leadership positions and seeing how she interacts with the customers and employees shows that you do not need to be stiff nor cruel to achieve goals within the pharmacy. She shows true respect and is a people's person which helps more when it comes to communication and getting the job done. Another experience that left an impression upon me was talking with a patient and helping them find a medication that would help them. Typically, this is just normal, everyday stuff that we do as pharmacists, but seeing the gratitude and happiness on the patient's face really had an impact on me. Seeing firsthand how one's help can make a big difference on peoples lives really motivates me to pursue this career. These experiences have helped further strengthen my love for retail pharmacy and help me appreciate it more and more. |

Please provide one example of an interprofessional observation and/or interaction that you had during this IPPE rotation in one to two sentences.: | One example of interprofessional interaction that I witnessed was the pharmacist talking to the doctor about a questionable medication prescribed. The pharmacist was basically asking for the prescribers reasoning as to why they prescribed the med to get better insight into the logic of the prescription. From that point, the pharmacist and prescriber worked together to come up with a better alternative for the patient by the phone call and ended up using another medication. |

Write Reflection Here:: | A moment in my IPPE rotation where I was the most engaged was during the filling process. In the process, the intern/technician is supposed to grab the correct bottles and fill them for the proper prescription. It seems like an easy task, but at the same time, a task such as this is one of the most important and impactful. It requires the utmost focus and concentration to ensure everything is done accurately. One step out of line, with any sort of mistake, can potentially make its way to the patient and cause a lot of trouble. During the filling process I try to stay as focused as I can and do my best to count the medication accurately. I enjoy doing it so I feel that it comes naturally to me to do a good amount of scripts in a given amount of time. In the back of mind, though, I feel a sense of fear and nervousness not to screw up because it can lead to detrimental effects. This is why I always double check my work: the NDC's match, the drug name matches, the script matches the drug, and that the quantity is accurate too. I want to make sure I make the pharmacist's lives as easy and troubleless as possible so I make sure I do what I need to do to succeed. This experience is definitely a great one for me. It keeps me locked in and focused on achieving a goal, so I love doing it! I have been looking forward to this rotation, so now that i am able to do it, I am so thankful and happy to be put in this situation. Some may just call it optimism, which is true, but I just love working in retail so it is also very beneficial. Based on this situation, I plan to further learn the CVS system more and improve myself so that I can be the best intern as possible and get me more and more ready to become a pharmacist! |

Write Reflection Here:: | Previously, before I started working at this rotation, I never had a plan to ever be a pharmacist as a long term care facility. I didn't even really know what it was before I started working here. After seeing how the operations and tasks are here, I can see myself potentially working in this type of environment in the future. One of the situations that swayed my decision was talking with the pharmacy manager and seeing her perspective and getting information from her about the operations. It had me so excited to hear about it because my goal is to not only be a pharmacist but to be a manager. Another experience that had me inspired was seeing the pharmacists do their work and how relaxing it appears without the headache of patients constantly. Also, seeing how happy everyone looks and seeing how everyone is constantly communicating and on the right page with one another is something that motivated me furthermore and made me happy that I chose to do this rotation to begin with! |

Write Reflection Here:: | There were many points during my IPPE rotation where I was fully engaged and locked into the situation. It was during the start of the the second week, after going through one whole week of the rotation and knowing what I had to do. I wanted to challenge myself to finish as many packs as I could in an hour. This purpose of this self challenge was to motivate myself and also be distracted from having to look at the time. It was a quiet and calm environment, as every morning is at Omnicare. Everyone is silently getting their work done and getting started with their day. I get to my station, get the gloves on, and bring over the bins that need to be completed. The clock strikes 8AM and I am off to the races. I was trying to fill each pack as fast as I could and as accurately as possible. I count it off each time I finish a pack. The majority of packs required me to fill the whole pack with all 30 tablets, so it took slightly big longer for me due to two tablets accidentally falling into the same hole and being tough to get out. Initially, I felt very thrilled to get started and challenge myself. My goal was to knock out 75 packs in an hour so I was motivated to touch my goal. The first ten minutes I was very energized and optimistic about the progress that I was making. I believe that I completed 15 in the first 10 minutes which landed me at a pace to complete 90 packs. In the next twenty minutes after, I completed only about 20 more which now put me behind pace of achieving the goal of 75. At the thirty minute mark I started to feel fatigue and was definitely getting much slower. I also get feeling frustrated towards the end because I kept getting two or three pills stuck in the same hole many times and struggled to get them out, which wasted a lot of precious time. I started getting very slow to the point where I looked around and everyone else was getting faster than me. This experience, personally, was a mix between positive and negative. The negative aspect of it was that I burned myself out and did not pace myself properly. This resulted in me feeling tired and slightly drained for the next hour or so after. The positive side of this was that I learned that I need to approach filling the pack at a better pace that does not drain me. The next 2 days after I tried a new pace and in turn, it improved my work ethic and energy for the rest of the shift. I feel this way because I realized the mental struggle I went through after 1 hour of me going full speed at filling the packs. I always want to improve and do better quality work whenever I am at a job and this experience helped me improve for the long run. Going forward, my action will be to pace myself and overload myself when working, but instead take it one step at a time to ensure I can accurately get things done. I also plan on eating a healthy breakfast and getting a cup of coffee to better set me ready for the shift ahead of me in the day so that I would not need to feel this drained again. |
