While I did not meet my goal of 90 seconds, I know I have improved my calculation speed by practicing.
Unfortunately, I was only able to counsel 1 patient without my preceptor intervening while on this rotation.
I have struggles with the finer details of the medications, so I've only learned about 4 of the most common drugs from each of my rotation sites. This means I have been familiarized with 16 medications that I've seen while out on rotations.
The progress on this goal is somewhat flipped since I have been in contact with almost all of my P4 mentors but only improved the relationship with one of my preceptors before the end of the fall semester.

P1 Spring Community Rotation
I was given the opportunity to work under Dr. Shawn Sams as a pharmacist intern from 02/07/2024 to 04/10/2024, for a total of 50 hours. At this rotation site, I was able to administer vaccines, assist patients in the pharmacy and over the phone, learn what factors affect the growth of an independent pharmacy, and I was able to sit in for an in-service conducted by a P4 student.
Hospital Shadowing.
I was given the opportunity to shadow a P4 student who was working under Dr. Becky Barr at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rehabilitation Hospital in Tyler, TX. During this rotation, I was able to explore the rehabilitation hospital, learn how the workflow of a hospital pharmacy differed from that of a community setting, and was able to witness my P4 mentor conduct medication evaluations for multiple patients. I also worked at the register, helping to give patients their medications and pulled medications to fill.

Ambulatory Care Shadowing
On 11/30/2023, I was given the opportunity to shadow a P4 student who was working under Dr. Jonathan Newsome at Tyler Family Circle of Care, here in Tyler, TX. At the clinic, I was able to observe how the P4 students collaborate and work up patients together. They pooled together their resources and showed me what is expected once I get to that level. I learned from Dr. Newsome that there are a multitude of factors that must be considered before we make any clinical decisions that come from the provider and patient side.
Acute Care/Adult Med Shadowing
On 9/22/2023, I was given the opportunity to shadow a P4 student who was working under Dr. Young Lee at UT Health Tyler. At the hospital, I was able to observe how the P4 student worked up a patient and how they presented their findings to the preceptor. While there, I was able to observe how interprofessional teams worked in the hospital and what was the pharmacist's role in the practice setting. Additionally, I also attended a journal club meeting along with other pharmacy students and the doctors performing their residencies.
Community Shadowing
On 11/03/2023, I was given the opportunity to shadow a P4 student who was working under Dr. Erica White at a CVS pharmacy (10340) in Mineola, TX. During this rotation, I was able to explore the computer systems at CVS, learn how the layout of the pharmacy contributed to a smooth workflow, and was able to administer a vaccine. I also worked at the register, helping to give patients their medications and pulled medications to fill.
Academic elective Shadowing
On 11/16/2023, I was given the opportunity to shadow a P4 student who was on an academic rotation with Dr. Jose Vega. We were located at UT Tyler FCOP for the entirety of my rotation. I was able to sit in for a presentation about our College of Pharmacy given to local students. Afterwards, I was tasked with preparing a sample quiz for my classmates in pharmaceutical calculations.

Hospital Resource goal
By the 6th day of my summer block 1 rotation, I want to learn and use at least 2 new resources that are effective in the hospital setting instead of using the resources that I am already familiar with (such as Lexicomp).
Epic Navigation goal
I want to be able to effectively navigate EPIC hyperspace and access the patient information I need without having to seek help from my preceptor by the 3rd or 4th day of my block 1 summer rotation.
Math Solving Goal
Before the end of the school year, I will have become proficient in pharmaceutical calculations to where I can answer questions in under 90 seconds.While I did not meet my goal of 90 seconds, I know I have improved my calculation speed by practicing.
Counseling Goal
By the end of my community rotation, I will have counseled 5 patients without having my preceptor to interject or correct me.Unfortunately, I was only able to counsel 1 patient without my preceptor intervening while on this rotation.

By the end of my 2nd rotation site, I will have gotten familiar with the 5 most common medications used to treat patients in their respective care settings.I have struggles with the finer details of the medications, so I've only learned about 4 of the most common drugs from each of my rotation sites. Networking goal

Arturo Mancias
Pharmacy student Arturo Mancias is currently attending the Fisch College of Pharmacy at UT Tyler as a 1st year student. He graduated from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in May of 2023. He has been working as a pharmacy technician at an independent pharmacy for about 3 years. His work as a technician started him on the path towards the next level and he started the pharmacy program in August of 2023. His current outlook for his career is to work in either academia or at the VA.
