What led you to choose a career in pharmacy?
My name is Fatima Choudhry. When I graduated high school in 2022, I was determined to start my college journey as a biology major because I wanted to get into Medical school. After the first year had passed, I noticed that I was not into biology. At the end of college's first year, my uncle got sick. I used to go with him to his doctor's appointment. One day, the doctor gave him two tablets, which he advised not to take 15 hours apart but my uncle took them back to back mistakenly which caused his condition to worsen. That day I wondered why we couldn't take these two together or maybe a short time apart. What sort of reaction would have happened? I knew that a pharmacist would have known why it happened. I ignored my passion for dealing with the patient and monitoring their medications. The next day I went to my aunt's pharmacy to meet her. She is a pharmacist too. She asked me to wait as she had her patients in front of her. I realized that her patients were her number one priority and she didn't want any meetups at the time. While I was waiting, I saw people from different cultures. She was dealing with them according to their cultures, such as speaking their language to make them comfortable and to make them understand how they should take their medications if they don't know English. I also saw some patients who came to meet her for personal reasons such as consultation on why they are addicted to something and want to quit it after they’ve found her as their pharmacist. And that behavior of hers had me amazed. Then I decided to change to pharmacy as it is one of the most trusted healthcare professions.
Why do you want to be a pharmacist?
I believe pharmacists re the most trustworthy professionals available in healthcare community. Pharmacist are the ones available for patient whenever they need.
What is your vision for pharmacy practice?
My vision is to see pharmacist using AI tools for the medication errors and their solutions. I believe that AI tools will help pharmacists to spend more time with patients instead of dispensing. Allowing patients to be more confident on what they're taking as medications or suggestions regarding their matters.
What are your goals?
My goal as a pharmacist is to assist my patients getting ahead in life. And make them comfortable with communicating about the things that they never wanted to talk about. Furthermore, I would love to learn about different cultures and languages so that I can assist my patients in the best manner I can. Being a pharmacist is important to me because pharmacists are who people trust after the doctor. Also, Doctors are not always available for the patients as much as the pharmacists are.
