My Bio: Miguel Galvez
About me

An attentive, hardworking, goal orientated student from the San Fernando Valley who is striving for a dual degree from the University of Rhode island in pharmacy and business. I'm a very active student, I participate in many extracurricular activities ranging from academic pharmacy clubs like SUPP to volunteer community development clubs like Habitat to athletic extracurriculars like basketball and volleyball.

I originally wanted to be a pharmacist to break the cultural barrier in my community. Growing up Mexican we were taught not to look an elder or someone of higher rank, such as a health professional, in the eye because it was disrespectful. Moreover, sometimes the community would be discouraged to communicate with the pharmacist because of a language barrier. As a kid, I saw this translate into poorer health outcomes in my community because no one would dare speak to someone like a pharmacist and take up their valuable time. I remember going to the pharmacy and I remember the pharmacist asking my mom if she had any questions about her medication, she never did, even though she didn't know what the medication was for. I want to be a pharmacist with the hopes that I can change my community's health outcomes. I could get them to take an interest in their health by being the initiator and letting them know they are the priority. I am here to make an impact.

Goals (Personal & Professional): Miguel Galvez
Professional Goals

My Professional Goals are the Following:

1) Graduate URI with a PharmD/MBA by 2021

2) Get a job with a community Pharmacy in an indigent or predominantly Hispanic community where my skills can be fully exercised

3) Become Manager of a Community Pharmacy and make it the gold standard of the district, while still having the patient be the priority and break any barriers to improve patient outcomes.

4) Teach others and develop more talent to be effective leaders adn organization members as everyone has done for me. Improve the organization from the bottom up.

5) Make more goals that target my core values and never be complacent.

Goals (Personal & Professional): Miguel Galvez
Personal Goals

My short term personal goals include: finishing my academic career with the dean's list every semester since I started. I currently have done it ten times and am on the path to accomplish it two more times.  However, school isn't everything I still want to maintain a strong relationship with my family and communicate with them daily. My long term goals are to make an impact in my community by breaking the language barrier faced in my community; in addition to reducing errors between pharmacist and patient interactions. Most importantly I want to be stable and happy.

Educational Background: Miguel Galvez

Work Persona

I have great retail experience and exceptional member services. I understand my role and what is expected of me and my behavior. I work well with others and am not afraid to lead or let others lead. I quickly identify areas where I can coach the team and approach them in a nonjudgemental way, allowing them to form the most appropriate conclusion that benefits the organization as a whole. Most importantly, I understand that as a worker in an organization, you are being paid to have a certain work ethic and behaviors within the organization. Every day you are representing your organization and need to behave like it is your organization because it is.

Student BUZZ Post-CGM

At RXinsider, I was tasked with reviewing and presenting my perspective over a sector within the pharmacy market. Below is an excerpt as well as a link to the full post.

Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and 30.3 million people in the United States who have diabetes use glucose testing. Most glucose testing involves frequent needle sticks into a finger to test blood sugar levels. Testing your blood sugar helps manage diabetes and helps people with diabetes decide what to eat, how to exercise, and how to manage insulin dosing.

To avoid frequent needle sticks, it might interest patients in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). CGM measures your blood sugar every few minutes through a tiny sensor that’s placed on your belly or arm; the sensor then sends the results to an insulin pump, smartphone, or reader.

Student BUZZ Posts- Discount Cards

At RXinsider, I was tasked with reviewing and presenting my perspective over a sector within the pharmacy market. Below is an excerpt as well as a link to the full post.

Discount cards are a method of payment for prescriptions in the pharmacy sector. Historically, most patients paid for prescriptions out of pocket; but, with the turn of the 90s, we saw more and more third-party payers in the pharmacy, such as Medicaid and Blue Cross insurance. Introducing Part D prescription coverage in the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization act of 2003, further bolstered third-party infrastructure into the pharmacy. According to 2015 data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 91% of the US population now has some type of third-party payer as Health Insurance.

Student BUZZ Posts- ZipDose Technology

At RXinsider, I was tasked with reviewing and presenting my perspective over a sector within the pharmacy market. Below is an excerpt as well as a link to the full post.

ZipDose is a 3D printing technology owned by Aprecia pharmaceuticals. In 2015, Aprecia’s proprietary technology led to the first FDA approved 3D printed drug, Spritam, which contains the active ingredient levetiracetam. Spritam is a porous tablet that disperses in seconds with a tablespoon of water. To take Spritam, place the tablet on your tongue and take a sip of water, wait for the tablet to melt, then swallow. Alternatively, place the tablet in a tablespoon of water, swirl, and drink. ZipDose technology would be helpful, not only for the pediatric population but for patients who struggle with adherence or dysphagia such as those affected by stroke, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease. Also, ZipDose technology has extensive taste-masking abilities. Aprecia holds an exclusive worldwide license for its novel technology and wants to introduce the benefits of ZipDose to the pharmaceutical world.
