Counseling Prevention & Intervention
I've decided to use my Behavior Regulation Psycho-educational Small Group PowerPoint for the Counseling Prevention & Intervention section of my portfolio. This presentation explores preventative and interventional counseling practices, providing a select group of kids struggling with classroom behavior, solutions, methods, and suggestions on appropriate conduct strategies. We are collaborating with teachers and attempting to stop undesirable future behaviors by providing them with behavior skills in the small group. One of my responsibilities as a school counselor is to create initiatives, like behavior groups, that aim to stop disruptive and detrimental behavior. Working with educators, administrators, and parents to help these students learn to control and regulate their emotions and behaviors is another aspect of my job.

Field Experience Summary
Prompt #1: – In your own words, summarize how serving in both elementary and secondary schools has contributed to your understanding of the diverse developmental needs of K-12 students, including exceptionalities? What have you learned about how K-12 students differ in their development and approaches to learning? How have you created opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners?
Serving in both Elementary and Secondary Education Schools has significantly broadened my understanding of the developmental stages of a child. In the elementary school setting, the child is still in the early stages of cognitive, social, and emotional development. They often need more activities and learn better with hands on learning that fosters their creativity. Elementary schoolers often need more guidance and assistance in their activities and throughout the day at school.
Secondary students tend to be more creative and capable of thinking critically. They are in the midst of adolescent hood and puberty, they are discovering who they are, and who they want to become in the future. Some are struggling with peer pressure and identity formation. They are capable of problem- solving and critical thinking opportunities. Secondary students often need more assistance in managing their emotions, their changing bodies, and social relationships. They are often ready to start thinking and talking about who they want to become and the occupation and schooling they are considering upon high school graduation.
I have also broadened my understanding of students with exceptionalities. Some students learn differently or at a slower pace than other students learn at. IEP’s and Section 504’s are great tools that can help students to get the accommodations that they need to be successful in the classroom. Gifted students need work that is more challenging to keep their attention and focus. Students also learn differently, some are kinesthetic learners, while others are auditory or visual learners. I have learned that all students are different from one another, but have an equal right to learn and be successful to succeed in school.
Prompt #2: – The Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) states, “The professional counselor recognizes that the client’s beliefs (or absences of beliefs) about spirituality and/or religion are central to his or her worldview and can influence psychosocial functioning.” How have your field experiences contributed to your understanding of the importance of including K-12 students’ religious and spiritual supports, especially if religion and spirituality are valued by the K-12 student?
Understanding students different religious and spiritual backgrounds has enabled me to become a more competent school counselor. Becoming more educated and knowledgeable about individual student’s different religions and spirituality has allowed me the opportunity to help student integrate their own religions, beliefs, and spirituality into their educational journey. Understanding the student’s different beliefs and religions has also helped support the student and their family in their educational journey. By collaborating with the student, their family, and my supervising counselor, it has allowed the student to strengthen their own beliefs, identity, and belonging within the school community.
Prompt #3 – How have your field experiences contributed to your understanding of the importance of including the K-12 student's family, community, and culture as a source of support?
My field experience has been helpful by providing me with real world experiences of how important family involvement, community resources, and cultural relevance is as a whole at forming a student’s identity and educational experience. Family involvement is a very important aspect to a child’s educational journey. When families are involved, the child has a higher chance of academic, emotional, and social success. Engaging in community resources can enhance student’s experiences outside of the classroom, it can bring academic learning to life by seeing real world experiences, and it can also give them a sense of belonging within the community. Understanding a child’s cultural background can help promote inclusivity and diversity within the school and the classroom. By providing diversity and inclusivity, it can help teachers and counselors to make learning more fun and engaging for students as well. My field experiences have brought more of a real world experience of how a successful school can run by family and community involvement, and respecting diversity and inclusivity.
Prompt #4 – How has your field experience strengthened your professional identity as a school counselor? What aspects of the school counselor's role, scope of practice, and the referral process have you learned from collaboration and consultation?
My field experience has strengthened my role as a school counselor by applying the knowledge, skills, and work I have learned in taking classes to a real world school experience. I have got the chance to interact and counsel students, work with my site supervisor to implement groups and programs such as the behavior regulation groups. I have learned the ins and outs, and the everyday roles and responsibilities of being a school counselor, and running a successful school counseling program. The referral process is another part of the counseling program that I have learned about through my field experience. The referral process is crucial to a student’s academic, emotional, and social needs. As a school counselor, it is my job to make sure the child gets the appropriate referral to help the child when their needs exceed the school counseling program or the school counseling program does not have the right tools and resources to help the child. It is also my job to follow up with the referral process to make sure the child is appropriately helped and seen about. Collaboration is another essential area to a successful counseling program. Collaborating is often when the counselor works with teachers, administrators, and other professionals to advocate for the student, address systematic change, and the overall well-being of the student body within a school. My field experience has helped me highlight the essential roles and responsibilities of a school counselor and how to run a successful school counseling program.
