My Bio: Alia Amin
Biography

I believe that everyone should have access to medications that will improve their quality of health. Having access to good healthcare will change the way in which people learn about medications. Pharmacists play a role in that they serve as a trustworthy source that community members can go to and receive quick and accurate information regarding medications and medical advice. My goal is to help give back to my community and find new ways to change how pharmacy is perceived. I chose pharmacy because I have seen directly how pharmacists can make an impact on the lives of many, including my mom. I believe that the field of pharmacy will always be necessary because after the pandemic the need for medicinal professionals dramatically increased. My vision for pharmacy practice includes being able to create change in the underserved minority communities. Not only by raising awareness on the dangers in abusing certain drugs but also helping diverse communities get healthier and improve their quality of life. Additionally, I hope to make medications more accessible since many cannot afford basic medicationsI believe that I can achieve these goals by figuring out what these communities need and using my voice to project communal issues and raise awareness so we can unite and solve them. Becoming a pharmacist is important to me because we have the capability to provide medicine to many different environments and the opportunities to make a meaningful impact is endless. Some of my positive attributes include being caring, determined, responsible, being able to empower and lead others. These attributes are extremely important because to be an excellent pharmacist you must have the drive and willingness to succeed and foster changes.

My personal accomplishment

One accomplishment of mine would be being able to maintain and balance my school work, household duties, as well as a job. I was doubted by many in being able to do everything however, my family strongly depends on me for many things since they are immigrants from another country and do not know the language very well. I have been able to help around the house carrying most of the chores such as cooking and cleaning, as well as assist my autistic brother through his college work and personal needs. Additionally, I assist both my parents in any of their needs that require me to translate for them or complete other duties for them such as managing all of their doctors appointments, filling out paperwork, etc. Additionally, I have also been able to stay on top of my work in school and get good grades in this program all while pushing my self to have a job that can be stressful at times.

My Top 5 Strengths

1) Restorative

2) Adaptability

3)  Achiever

4) Responsibility

5) Command

Something that surprised me regarding my strengths was the order of them. I was surprised to see restorative being my number one strength. Although when I do notice a problem I always get the strong urge to fix it, I would have expected to recieve adaptability or responsibility as my first strength.

I will utilize my strengths to help me accomplish my goals by adapting to the diffucult situations I am put in, taking responsibility in the work I do and hand in and always make sure that it is my best work. Additionally when problems arise I will put my best efforts to find solutions to them and looking at those bumps as challenges rather that situations I won't be able to get through. I will always aim to do my best and take leadership roles when necessary.

Why did you choose St John's University?

I chose St. John's University for a variety of reasons. To begin with the main reason I chose this University was that it is one of the best pharmacy schools in the country and the PharmD program is offered. Additionally, I chose St. John's due to the numerous opportunities that it offers and the great community of people who are there. From the amazing diversity and unity among its students and faculty I was sure that I would thrive both in this school and program.  Additionally, the St John's mission aligns perfectly with my goals so I knew it was the right fit for me.

Why did you choose pharmacy?

Growing up I always knew I had an interest in the medical field, however I always struggled with the idea of staying in one environment for the rest of my life and not having many options. I was originally debating between a nurse practioner and pharmacy and I ended up choosing pharmacy due to many reasons. One being that although their role is often overlooked by many, they play a crucial role in the medical field and have the power to impact society in meaningful ways. From giving simple advice to patients in which medications to avoid due to possible negative side effects to helping someone find a medication to live a pain free life. Additionally, pharmacy is a great field in that there arenumerous environments that one can work in. From working with the community or hospitals where you can have direct contact with patient to working for private research companies where you have the capability for discovering new medications. Lastly, after the pandemic with many hospitals being flooded with patience and there were no available beds, the needs for pharmacists drastically increased due to people seeking advice pertaining to their medical issues since no other places were suitable for them and in administering their vaccines.

What does being a pharmacist mean?

I believe that being a pharmacist is much more than just adminisitring patients their medication. I believe that pharmacists hold the power to impacting the lives of numerous patients. From monitering their care and making sure they are taking their medications properly, to answering their questions regarding their medications.  Additonally, Pharmacists have the ability to work in numerous different feilds so their roles would differ regarding that area they are working in. For example, if you work in research, you would be less invlolved in direct patient care and more involved with the phsycial medications.
