- Describe, in your own words, “What is a pharmacist”?
When I think of a pharmacist, I envision someone who is a scientist at heart. Not only are they compassionate, but they are objective in nature and care about the people they serve. A pharmacist is a servant leader as what most healthcare professional strives to become. They're on the forefront of research and development and also constantly utilizing their knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) in patient care and their daily lives. They are punctual and take good care of themselves by taking a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, are consistently growing and learning new advances in technology and business. Pharmacists have a delicate work-life balance and is someone who should reflect on their day ahead as their tasks can become tedious. Therefore, a pharmacist needs a highly focused and extroversion to a level that makes meaningful interactions with the population and abides by the rules and laws by setting good examples for peers and mentors.
- Why did you personally choose Pharmacy as your major?
I chose Pharmacy as a major because I want to help people. As a child, I was very curious and started reading books above my grade level. I yearn for more knowledge and I believe education is indeed the key to success. While many believe leadership is both innate in characteristics and can be learnt, in my opinion, I want to be a charismatic leader. Someone that possesses a warm and friendly smile that patients know and trust. I hope to set a good example for both my peers, family and patients. I chose pharmacy because it is governed by a lot of rules and laws that protect patient information and also helps health care providers in an event that any thing should occur. Knowing this sort of information will be rewarding as the social institutions put in place are from the start of the apothecary and even though many changes are made to the structure of the profession. The majority remains the same, founded in scientific principles, behaviors and a certain way of doing things which are the norms and values.
- Why did you choose to study pharmacy here at St. John’s University?
Many of our brightest and founding fathers since the dawn of the revolutionary period of mankind or even in the renaissance era have roots in Roman Catholicism. It is the only way to have a wider approach to learning not just facts and figures but a more comprehensive approach. Roman Catholicism since earlier times have always been the authority on education. With that being said, I would not see any school as being fit on this level, juxtaposed to St. John’s University. St. Johns university remains true to its origins and is interdisciplinary. St. John’s University as an institution focuses not only on its image but also on charity and global perspective and outreach which is why I chose to study Pharmacy at St. Johns University. As someone who also has a degree in Natural Sciences, the interdisciplinary aspect of the pharmacy program was very appealing to me.
