Start and end date: November 2019- June 2023.
Hrs: 225
Description: Twice a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 4 pm to 6:30 pm, my team and I, which consist of a mentor/overseer and a group of 9 same age range individuals, would pack up candy and make a presentation that is relative to the current event that is happening in one day. We will teach them to middle schoolers/ high schoolers. We will also go help out at different places. For example, nursing homes and orphanages, where we will watch over the kids and the elderly and help make food to give to them. I enjoyed this a lot because I have kept up with so many current events, and it also makes me feel good that I am helping people.
My strengths are adaptability, includer, arranger, restorative, and relator. I can use these strengths to improve my skills as a student pharmacist. My adaptability allows me to get the hang of things quickly. I can judge the mood and respond accordingly. My restorative strength comes from my interest in medicine. In a leadership position, I can bring people into the conversation and use their strength to help with the problem at hand. Being able to relate to others and be patient can help me quickly break the ice and get into speaking terms. Only then can I start helping them.
Why did I choose to Study at St. John's University?
In high school, I had an interest in the medical field, and when I was in the college office deciding my college, one of my advisers suggested I look into becoming a pharmacist. Then, I looked at many colleges that offer pharmacy programs. I found Touro College of Pharma, St John, LIU, and the University at Buffalo. I dig deeper into the colleges; Buffalo and Long Island are too far away. I then choose St. John because of the impressive campus and events over the crowded Manhattan. I also heard SJU from the local pharmacy when I asked the pharmacist with whom I was close and where he got his degree. I then did research into the school, and I resonated with the school’s mission statement. I believe in growing every moment and acquiring knowledge through endless learning.
Why Did I Choose Pharmacy?
I chose Pharmacy as my major mainly because of my college adviser and family's suggestion. Pharmacists are counted as doctors; if I became a doctor, they would be proud of me. I am very interested in the medical field because being a doctor is a noble job, and helping others is a noble act. Also, pharmacist makes good money, so I can support my family who raised me. I want to become a pharmacist because I want to be someone the patient can relate to. I want to choose a medical profession that can connect to the patient more profoundly and personally. I want to be involved in developing a medicine or drug that can care for some terminal illnesses.
What Does Being a Pharmacist Mean?
Pharmacists are the cornerstone of healthcare, prioritizing their patients' well-being and quality of life above all else. They are not just experts in medication but knowledgeable professionals who guide, advise, and empower patients about their treatment options. Their impact goes beyond the confines of the pharmacy walls. Pharmacists play a pivotal role in developing and distributing life-saving vaccines, benefiting millions worldwide. Throughout the challenging times of quarantine and the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacists demonstrated unwavering dedication in the quest for a vaccine. They embody versatility, akin to a "jack of all trades" in healthcare. From administering vaccinations to providing consultations and offering limited diagnostic services, pharmacists possess a diverse skill set. Their personalized approach involves collaborating closely with patients to understand their needs fully, ensuring the most effective treatment. Importantly, pharmacists foster a culture of respect and empathy, never judging patients based on their health conditions. Instead, they provide support and guidance, instilling confidence and trust in their patients' journeys toward better health.
