Dr. William Chen is a pediatric resident with Memorial Hospital Pediatric Associates based in Yourtown, Maryland. Dr. Chen's emphasis has always been on prevention and health maintenance, and with the rise of pediatric diseases and illnesses, the need is even greater. His passion is to educate, influence, and inspire pediatrics and their parents to lead healthier lives by rethinking what health really means.

Dr. Chen grew up in Kenner, Michigan where he received his undergraduate degree at the local state University, prior to pursuing his medical training at Browman Medical School in Maryland. After completing his pediatric residency at Brownman, he will be pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.

Dr. Chen is passionate about mentorships and preceptorships. He believes," Students are our brightest stars and have much to teach us as they learn. In the medical profession, we are life long learners, and learning during a preceptorship is a two-way street."As a lifelong learner Dr. Chen still actively participates in grant research around health disparities and treatment outcomes with the pediatric population.

Brownam Pediatric Residency is committed to clinical training in both pathways emphasizing a well balanced, hands-on experience in pediatrics that prepares residents equally well for careers as pediatric generalists or pediatric subspecialists. 

The Department of Pediatrics categorical training program provides all residents with: 

• A comprehensive and competency-based introduction to, and on-going exposures over three years of training in, acute care and subspecialty pediatrics, adolescent medicine, and behavioral and developmental pediatrics
• 50% of all clinical exposures (general and subspecialty) in ambulatory settings
• 20% of training time devoted to continuity of patient care

The categorical pediatric training program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

All fellowship programs in the Department emphasize excellence in clinical care, teaching and research. Many physicians who have completed their general residency training at Brownam choose fellowship training in the Department of Pediatrics.

During this period students are introduced to common pediatric problems, office management, doctor-patient relationships, community & civic duties, etc.

Our research aims to investigate the mechanisms by which perfectionism, social support, emotion regulation, etc contribute to the development of anxiety disorders. Currently, we are collecting data from a large cohort in an effort to clarify the factors associated with the development and maintenance of anxiety in pediatrics.

Epidemiologic studies have documented higher rates of disease prevalence and morbidity in minority children compared to non-Latino white children. Few studies focus on the mechanisms involved in explaining this disparity, and fewer still on the methodological challenges involved in rigorous disparities research. Proposed was a new multidisciplinary collaboration that has the potential to improve understanding of determinants of child health disparities and advance interventions that could assist in the elimination of a child's health disparity condition.

Prescription drug abuse has been increasing to historic highs; similarly, so have our teenage usage rates. Drug abuse is especially problematic for teenagers because they are still in their developmental stage, and can unknowingly set themselves up with a potentially life-threatening habit when exploring there likes and dislikes.  It is important to begin fostering awareness & education programs for those at risk. Few programs specifically target the youth to mitigate the problem before it starts. Preventing and educating about teenage drug abuse is essential in improving the future health of our community.

Foreign body ingestions are frequent in the childhood population. Most foreign bodies are passed spontaneously through the gastrointestinal tract. However, on occasion, they can also be a rare cause of morbidity and even mortality, such as in the case of multiple magnetic foreign body ingestion, which can cause injury via magnetic attraction through bowel walls. We present two cases of multiple magnetic foreign body ingestion, which to our knowledge are the first ones reported in Hong Kong. Read more below. 

A 22-day-old male neonate was referred to our emergency department from a community hospital after realization that an acute acetaminophen overdose had occurred, following routine circumcision. The patient had been born at 40 weeks’ gestation after an uneventful delivery to a gravida 1 mother. The pregnancy had been complicated by pregnancy-induced hypertension, treated with labetalol. Prior to the overdose, the baby had been well. Read more below.  

Reye syndrome is a rare and potentially fatal pediatric illness defined as acute noninflammatory encephalopathy with fatty liver failure. Australian pathologist R.D.K. Reye first described this syndrome in 1963. National surveillance of Reye syndrome began in the United States in the early 1970s and led to strict warnings regarding aspirin use in children. Reye syndrome typically presents in children as vomiting and confusion with rapid progression to coma and death.
